Johnny had class.
In private, he was always called John and was very shy and withdrawn. Although, a friend of mine once temped as his secretary and she loved him.

Jonny Carson was one of the FEW people who could make my dad laugh(He liked Carol Burnett also).

I think we can figure out which side of the aisle he was on. But unlike these make believe Carson’s that we see now he didn’t show it off.

And he was a true comedic genius, he doesn’t get nearly enough credit for that.

It was known during his popularity that he lived a life that mirrored his on-screen personality. But it was this public personality we all loved and embraced.
I’ve acquired a number of YouTube videos of vignettes from his shows. They’re a great reminder of how good television can be when done right, by people with talent.

One of my favorite Johnny Carson moments:
Johnny barging in on the live taping of CPO Sharkey to confront Don Rickles over a broken cigar box.
Classic!

What I liked about him was he didn't take himself too seriously, and struck me as the kind of a guy you would feel comfortable having a beer with. My favorite "Carnac" moment:
CARNAC (Holding the envelope to his forehead): "Sis, Boom, Bah."
ED McMAHON (Reading the question): "What does it sound like when a sheep explodes?"

Carson was an outstanding entertainer and always displayed class with a sense oh humor. He had a right to his privacy and, in my mind, still does. What purpose does a psychological profile being televised at this point serve. He wasn’t a leader of a nation, church or ideology. Leave us our memories of his public side and spare us the trashing that usually comes with these documentaries.

What sets Carson apart from the rest was his ability to conduct both a serious or a comedic interview. And he was good at both.
Since Carson, the networks have chosen only professional clowns to do late-night. They don’t have anyone who can mix it up a bit. Leno can’t. Letterman can’t. Don Imus does both types of interviews, but sucks at both.

Johnny as a political candidate giving a speech while hooked up to a polygraph is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on TV.

I remember him from his first foray into television, and the first time I ever saw a TV set. It was when he hosted the game show “Who Do You Trust” from 1957-1963. Watched him all through the years to his final Tonight Show broadcast.
