Paul Clement, who served as U.S. solicitor general under President George W. Bush and is now a lawyer in private practice, is the favorite of many conservatives. Clement argued last month for the Supreme Court to strike down Obama's 2010 healthcare law, and he is defending laws that ban same-sex marriage and that target illegal immigrants. Clement, 45, would be "at the top of any short list right now," said Curt Levey, executive director of the Committee for Justice, a group that advocates for conservative nominees.
Asked about Clement, Mary Ann Glendon, a co-chairwoman of Romney's Justice Advisory Committee, voiced "unbounded admiration" for him. "He's the type of person who fits the mold that the governor has pledged to look for," Glendon said, adding that "it's much too soon to speculate about names."
Mentioned as often as Clement is Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Kavanaugh, 47, sits on a court that produced four sitting justices. He has deep roots in Washington, D.C., having worked in the Bush White House and assisted in the 1990s investigation that nearly led to President Bill Clinton's ouster. Kavanaugh is known for elaborate opinions such as a 65-page dissent he wrote in November exploring how an 1867 tax law barred courts from considering Obama's healthcare law until 2015.
A third possibility, Judge Diane Sykes, is often mentioned as a likely Romney nominee if the next person to leave the Supreme Court is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the court's senior woman justice. Ginsburg has survived cancer twice. Sykes, 54, was appointed to a Chicago-based U.S. appeals court in 2004, overcoming Democratic criticism of her record in abortion-related cases.

It seems he only picked judges they would agree upon. Why would he fight the Senate any more than he would fight the GC?
Whatever.
I guess he was a “rock ribbed conservative”, or maybe that’s just the name brand condom he distributed to advance gay sex for kids
So your reponce “he couldn’t help himself he was a governor of a liberal state”. I say he was governor there because he was a liberal - always was and always will be.
Yea I can see how 100% is way different than 95%.
Well count me in for being a Romney non believer. But if the nasty one’s hands were tied in Mass, they would be as well in the appointment of Supremes.
The GOP-E is going to expect to have alot o’influence(wink, wink) should they happen to luck out and drag their golden boy across the finish line....like “We had your unlikable back, Willard, so now it’s major payback time”.
Expect Rinos in the McConnell, Rove and McCain mold to have a Supreme weigh in.
A newly appointed justice could end up being fence sitter or a linguine spined “reacher across the aisle”.. but would be preferable to the deplorable and dangerous lefty feminazis Sotomayor and Kagens..
But just for the record, after Hussein and his Jarrett/Axelrod attack dogs finish off the Bishop with figurative oozies and pitbulls and very real money by fall, this conversation will probably be moot.
Why couldn’t you name the candidates?
Paul Clement
Brett Kavanaugh
Diane Sykes
Steven Colloton
Neil Gorsuch
Jeffrey Sutton
Miguel Estrada
Viet Dinh
Michael Luttig
Michael McConnell
Good point. But can anyone name a single conservative that the Massachusetts legislature would have confirmed?
Well, Romney sure catered to them, that’s for sure. A heavy majority of his picks weren’t even Republicans, much less conservatives.
And the radical homosexual activists he appointed must have really sent a shiver up the leg of Mitt’s Democrat friends in the legislature.
People who are unable to see the difference between between Governing Mass as a Republican and being President will never get it. “Romney had a record in Mass of appointing liberal judges...what makes you think he will be any different as President?” Michael Jordan had a record in the NBA but how did that work out when played baseball? Apples and Oranges.
All of Robamney’s appointments would be liberal as well and, what’s more, the GOP Senators will march in lockstep because Robamney’s choices will be said to be “our guys” even if they include Bernardine Doehrn, openly homosexual flagrant faggots, practicing abortionists, animal, ummm, lovers, folks living in twelvesomes with space aliens, Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton, Princess SummerFallWinterSpring Warren of the Hahvuhd Law Faculty after she loses her Senate race, Coupe DeVal, Dannell Malloy, Anthony Cuomo, Richard Durbin, Barack Insane Obozo, etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseam as the Mittwit shows what a sport he is by “reaching across the aisle” and nominating every militant leftist nutcase in the land not named Willard and, boy, will THAT be a thrill for Muffy and Skipper down at the polo club.
Could he still do his radio show?
Leaving judgeships empty until the courts wither away is infinitely better than naming leftists, pro-aborts, homosexuality worshipers, gun grabbers, land grabbers, etc. to ANY bench vacancy. Tell the Governor’s Council that they are not getting the leftists THEY want and tell the same thing to the legislature when they start whining. Why is it that RINOs always seem to believe that it is better to totally cave to keep gummint in action rather than to stand for GOP principles??? Oh, wait, it is because RINOs have absolutely NO PRINCIPLES other than lining their pockets and Muffy’s Trust Fund with taxpayer moolah.
Earl Warren, anyone? William Brennan? Potter Stewart? Herod Blackmun? Lewis Powell? Sandra Day O'Connor? Anthony Day O'Kennedy? David "Swish" Souter? There are others of lesser evil named by GOP presidents but no one is expecting Robamney to name actual conservatives if they are familiar with Robamney's utterly spineless record and non-stop excuse-making. The GOP-E threw this election away by funding Robamney's totally negative carpetbombing of every decent candidate. Time to get ready for 2016 when there may again be a meaningful POTUS election unlike 2012. Let Obozo use taxation to confiscate the ill-gotten warchests of the Romney backing Wall Street gang. Maybe 2016 can be fought as a ground war in which case the GOP-E is finished. Meanwhile, utterly destroy Lugar in Indiana on Tuesday, nominate Cruz in Texas over Dewhurst and make whatever paltry gains are still available in spite of Robamney's probable nomination, destroy Robamney, brace for the final four years pf Obozo, tell the GOP Senators (even the GOP-E) that ANY aid and comfort to Obozo will be treated as the treason that it is, wall to wall total RESISTANCE and bloodbath primaries followed by bloodbath elections every two years. No quarter! RULE OR RUIN!
As to BOTH Obozo and the GOP-E, follow the alleged and possibly apocryphal example of Scipio Aemilianus Africanus in the Third Punic War: Burn their houses. Salt their fields. Leave not a stone lying upon a stone until future generations will not know where it was that Carthage once existed. That is what is deserved for the persecution of the Roman Catholic (and, by necessary implication, each and every other pro-life and pro-family religion) Church under both Robamneycare and Obozocare, and the common traits of both candidates: gun grabbers, babykillers, enemies of family friendly policies, despisers of the religions of most Americans, nominators of leftist menaces to courts, anti-military (if you doubt this about Romney, name one male in his line who has EVER served in the military of this country), suckups to leftist intellectuals and poseurs, gilt-edged phonies, global "climate change" delusionaries; cap and trade enthusiasts, fashionable trendies; enemies of the Declaration of Independence and of the Constitution, etc.
Estrada endorsed Kagan for SCOTUS (and he was a private citizen at the time, with nothing to gain by lending support to Obama's pick).
No thanks, he's shown his true colors now.
What is the process for appointing or electing judges in MA. The process within the state would impact his submissions I’d expect. Does the governor have free reign to appoint anyone at his will or is there some type nominating commission that submits names to him from which he must choose? Who approves the selections, the legislature or someone else?
Anyone have any info?
I’m still very surprised Ginsburg didn’t retire when Obama could have easily replaced her with someone 25 years younger when they had the chance. Same for Breyer.
We conservatives seem to have lucked out with Scalia and Kennedy both lasting through Obama’s term from 73-76 but that was no guarantee, and if one of them had retired/stepped down for whatever reason we’d have bene totally screwed. The liberals would have controlled the Court for the next 20 years. Thankfully that didn’t happen.
I can only guess that Obama and the dems guaranteed a victory and that’s why she stayed on. If there was even the slightest chance the smart play was to retire last summer.
Wisconsin Possible Romney SCOTUS picks: 2 from WI
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off this Wisconsin interest list.
The state Executive Council has to clear them and every member of it has been a DemocRAT for many, many years.
