Santorum wants promises from Romney before backing

WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum wants to ensure the GOP's policy platform represents conservatives' interests. Newt Gingrich wants help retiring his campaign debt and repairing his reputation.

Both Republicans are expected to endorse their former rival Mitt Romney — and signal to their backers to fall in line behind the party's presumptive nominee — but each wants assurances that Romney will deliver for them. Neither is rushing toward the task.

Meanwhile, it doesn't appear that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is going to go that way. Paul is still in the race and hasn't yet recognized Romney as the party's nominee. The tea party favorite and former Libertarian presidential nominee seems unlikely to endorse given deep differences with Romney on economic and foreign policy issues.

Romney plans to meet Santorum on Friday and Gingrich plans to endorse him this week, an end-of-primary dance that happens every four years once the party settles on a nominee.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, quit the race April 10 but has stopped short of publicly embracing Romney as the GOP's standard bearer after a bitter primary season that featured Santorum calling Romney "the worst Republican in the country" to run against Obama.

....people close to Santorum said, he wants assurances from Romney that the party's platform would represent conservatives' interests, and that Romney would govern as a conservative.

Unlike Gingrich, Santorum also doesn't need Romney's help to retire campaign debt.

I think his behavior is all the evidence one needs. Santorum is exactly like Romney in everything but his more conservative social positions (many of which became a lot more conservative when he saw that they were selling points-look at his track record).

To me the depressing thing about this is that it shows that social conservatives are by no means political or fiscal conservatives, and that GOP voters actually do want a big-government nanny-state RINO.

On that basis, I think Santorum believed he had the VP position sewed up, since Romney would benefit from his social conservative votes and Santorum thought this would be a bargaining chip. But I think Romney now realizes that he doesn’t need them, and that most of the socons will vote for him anyway once he becomes the nominee, so now he’s free to look for another RINO from an important state (such as Rob Portman from Ohio).

Romney: "Sure! Sure, Rick! Whatever you say - I personally guarantee it!"

I am running out of ideas that prevent Obama from being elected. Do you have anything? Who do we vote for that sends Obama packing? I don’t think the country can last another 4 years of this aspiring dictator. What options do we have left? I am open for suggestions.

What other option do we have?

I understand that Romney is a crap candidate. So who do we vote for that unseats Obama? If Obama gets another term we have committed suicide as a nation. We will be another 3rd world marxist country like Venezuela.

This election is tearing me up. This is a lose lose election. I see no good way out.

If you are prepared to vote for Mittens, we’ve established what you are. After establishing that, isn’t it only a matter of dickering over your price?

If you are prepared to endorse Romney, "The worst republican in the country," we've established what you are. After establishing that, isn't it only a matter of dickering over your price?

I would not think so; however...

I would hope he simply wants to get Romney to make statements publicly and specifically on some issues he has thus far been mum and or ambiguous on SO THAT conservative can at least TRY to hold his feet to the fire. As of right now, Romney has been given a free pass by both the RINO establishment GOP and the Media.

I would agree that there is a big difference between forcing Romney to exchange vows and forcing Romney to faithfully act; HOWEVER, in this apparent upcoming shotgun wedding between conservatives and the blushing bride apparent RINO Romney there are some who AT LEAST want an I DO before being forced into the relationship.

An excellent move by Rick Santorum, especially since Rick is the guy who won 11 states.

Wish more people would get some public assurances from Romney. If many, many pro-life, conservatives get promises from Romney, he will look like a fool if he doesn’t comply.

Thanks Rick for continuing to look out for our country.

I despise Rmney on his political opinions ... in his heart, he's a self-annointed LIBERAL Celestial God-Child ...

and that wasn't even hyperpole ...

However, "anyone" who trusts Romney at all ... is a complete FOOL ...

There's a Free Republic thread today about Juna McCain congratulating Obama for going to Afghanistan ...

Where does the GOP get such political imbeciles ?

Really, where do these chuckleheads come from ?

And two years from now ... after Obama has destroyed Romney in the election ...

and continues to destroy America ...

Mitt Romney and Juna McCain will still be saying that "Obama is really a Swell Guy" ...

I am not attacking and I will not attack Gingrich or Santorum for endorsing Romney. Unless they're going to bolt from the Republican Party, that is unavoidable.

Those of us who are not in elected office have more freedom than they do.

As conservatives, we've lost the race to win the Republican Party's presidential nomination. I don't think mutual bashing between the Gingrich and Santorum supporters helps anyone. Let's try to figure out what we're going to do to pick up the pieces after Romney loses this fall.

Yes. You can't be "sometimes faithful;" you either are or your not.

Romney and 0bama are cut from the same liberal cloth....both would sell their own mother for political gain. Perhaps your threat of 4 more years of BO should be directed at the RNC/GOPe.

Why should I have to compromise my values? If the upper echelons of the RNC want to elect libs so bad, then why don't they just switch parties already? If people foolishly and blindly follow them because "their" guy has an 'R' after the name why would they provide a decent alternative to the marxists? Does bleeding to death suck any less just because you're bleeding slower?

It appears you've already identified yourself and are now just negotiating the price.....sad.
