A New York City barber was accused of violating the citys discrimination policy because he charged women three dollars more for a hair cut than men.
Im here for 21 years and Ive never heard of such a thing, said Leon Kogut, the owner of Leons Fantasy Cut in Brooklyn. The guy tells me this is discrimination of a woman.
An inspector slapped the barber with three violations totaling $650 in fines.
Kogut said the inspector took issue with the fact that he charged $13 for a mans haircut and $16 for a womans.
A womans haircut requires a lot of skill, Kogut said. You have to style the hair, blow dry, use the mousse, the hairspray. It could take hours to get her hair cut.
On the other hand, he said, it only takes a few minutes to cut a guys hair.
Its a different kind of hair cut, he said.
Kogut tried to reason with the city inspector.
The inspector was not swayed and told Kogut that to be in compliance of the law he could only charge different prices for long hair and short hair.
I said, Okay, Ill do it. Its my mistake, he said. But I never know this nobody ever told me this.
But that wasnt the end of Koguts problems. It turns out the city also took issue with his nearly 100-year-old cash register.
Why didnt the cash register print receipts, the inspector demanded to know.
I told him, the cash register is three times older than you, sir, Kogut said. The cash register is 93 years old.
That resulted in another fine for the 64-year-old barber.
Nobody ever asks for receipts in a barber shop, he said. Im here 21 years in this shop and nobody asks for receipt.

Why doesn’t NYC institute a law that a doctor must examine a woman’s uterus by sticking a finger up her rectum, too?
"Please bend over, grab your ankles and assume the position, that is after you hand over your wallet, your home, vehicle, and 1st born."
My haircuts cost $10. In and out in less than 10 minutes. I don’t think any woman would be happy getting the equivalent of my haircut. Unless they are lesbians.
My wife cuts my hair. No charge, but I pay in the long run :>)
This barber obviously does not know how much better that government servant makes his life.
..do I really need the /sarc?
Yes lately here I probably do need it.
You have to style the hair, blow dry, use the mousse, the hairspray.”
Needs a new price chart!
Hair Cut = $13
Hair Style = $16
If a woman wants a cut, she gets no style, blow dry, mousse, or hairspray!
I’d love to comment but it’s ladies night at my local watering hole...
Fianlly, someone is fixing this inequality. Now I want the service station inequality dealt with. When I go in to get my transmission changed they charge me more than they charge the guy that’s in for an oil change.
You and me both. I finally broke down and bought a hair clipper. The cheap side of me overcame the lazy part of me.

Reminds me of the story of dry cleaners charging more to dry clean/starch/press a woman’s shirt vs a man’s shirt. How did that ever work out?
So give’em the same haircut!
City probably wants receipts of products sold for sales tax collection. A newer register would probably record all of the transactions.
Give her a man’s hair cut. Should only take 10 minutes and she won’t be back.
If he’s got the prices listed and the customers are OK with them, what’s the problem??
He’s not forcing them to come into his store.
Some people are more equal than others.... *sigh*
Better, they should charge by the hour. That way fussy people pay more. 85 cents a minute sounds about right.
One other thought:
Why was the inspectors name not divulged? The barber’s name was.
Why didn’t the reporter talk to the inspector.
How can you call this fair and balanced?
