When Erin McCoy awoke from a Saturday afternoon nap to the sound of glass breaking, she grabbed a shotgun. Seeing a hand trying to open the window in her kitchen, she tried to warn him off, but he kept coming. That’s when she sent an ounce or so of persuasion toward the uninvited guest. Pretty much your standard issue DGU. Woman defends herself, suspects flee and one presents at the local ER with a sucking chest wound claiming he was “shot while playing basketball.” But in a post-Trayvon world, something has changed . . .
Check out the report of the burglary interruptus from WRAL, Fayetteville, North Carolina, above. Notice the feigned surprise of the talking head, Jackie Highland, as she intro’s the story and throws it to Brian Mims.

That’s when Bri gives the camera a gravely concerned look and a heavy, world-weary sigh before launching into an extended – well, for TV news, anyway – description of North Carolina’s Castle Doctrine law for the uneducated masses who still actually look to local broadcasts for anything more than the weather report. He even throws in a reference to Jolly Ol’ England, citing the law’s origins. Impressive.
Anecdotally speaking, this seems to be the new normal. Almost every account of someone using a gun to defend himself now carries a much more detailed description of how the Castle Doctrine applies and the fact that, when used as written, the gun user is protected from prosecution.
The more disapproving accounts (no matter how clear-cut the DGU may have been) go to great lengths to explain that police and prosecutors’ hands are tied in these cases by the Machiavellian machinations of the state legislature that enacted the statute. Others give a more straightforward rundown of the protections afforded a self-defender. YMMV depending on locality and the J-school the reporter involved attended.
It’s hard to tell whether all the added explication comes from sincere effort to provide more news you can use in the wake of Zimmerman’s shooting of Martin or if it’s just thinly veiled lamentation over our increasingly gun-friendly society. If Isaiah Witty and Deshawn Smith has been wearing hoodies last weekend, it seems a good bet that Mims would have reported that crucial fact. Thank God there were no Skittles found at the scene.
Castle Doctrine. Yep. Just passed this year.
Watching the video it seems the Leftist journos reporting on this story seem a little angry and sad that the castle doctrine exists there and that the lady successfully used a firearm to defend herself against Holder’s people.
It must have passed with N.C.’s nutty governoress being unable to veto it for some crazy lib reason.
Anyway, I love North Carolina (I’m a S.C. native but drive through there often) although it has its mostly commonsense Southern side, and its liberal import nutcake side (avoid Asheville if possible, better yet go there and see Haight-Ashbury hippies circa 1967).
This story has a happy ending. Especially with the liberal infopeeps reporting it through clenched teeth. That’s the icing on the cake.

What amazes me about the libs is their ability to detach from what happens to other people. Like someone else’s wife and daughter being raped and murdered could never happen to them. How can they express sympathy for perps and little for victims.
I’m not sure this lady would need the castle dotrine to justify this shooting. I’m a prosecutor and a judge (Harvard educated but raised in Montana) once told me that most all defenses to criminal prosecutions are grounded in necessity. The test is “was it reasonable and was it necessary?”. The inquiry should end there.
George Zimmerman is said to be a Democrat. It will be interesting to see if this changes by the fall voting.
To these leftist journalists, these perps are fellow Democrats. Remember now, the Democrat Party is nothing but a loose coalition of Godless Communists, criminals, and perverts, but they do stick together when one of them is caught committing a crime against a non-Democrat.

Then maybe you would know the answer to this: how would I go about challenging the legitimacy of a state statute for violating the state’s own constitution? From asking around, it seems like I have to actually get myself charged with violating the statute in order to gain any standing... and that just seems wrong.
I am very leery of what are IMO trolls claiming, “I’m liberal, but I collect guns and love to go to the range and shoot” . I’ve seen a lot of such comments at Youtube, etc., recently....
My mom is moving out of NC in two weeks. Can’t get out of there fast enough. If you’re not family, the hill people treat you like crap.
That’s not in my specialty, but it seems that the Sierra Club has mastered the art of acquiring standing for persons who aren’t affected by a particular law. Find someone who has defended their lawsuits.

I hear you. I retired a year ago from a workplace where the shop supervisor is an unreconstructed North Carolina hillbilly. Treats the mechanics just like you say. Nobody can stand him.
Your are right, in WPA the newsies know that PA folks are all red necked, tobacco chewing, gun toten, Bible thumpen Stiller fans, and we know how to find out where the newsies live.
My neighbor just left for two weeks on vacation {unemployment is 6.2% because of Marcellus drilling in WPA} and he axed me to watch his house in his absence.
If I see anybody doing a B & E, the police will be the least of their worries.

You know like I do that Asheville is a hippie time warp and is no place for traditional minded folks. Been there on business, couldn’t believe what I saw.
FWIW, I happen to be acquainted with the federal judge for the Western District of North Carolina. He works in Charlotte and is from a local family. Told me his current post could be described as `the law west of the Pecos’. Apparently the hill country produces some pretty wild cases, just sayin’.
Drove to Tennessee last week. US 40 through the Pisgah Gorge is a beautiful sight to see.
