The Senate Republican primary in Nebraska has turned into a proxy war between conservatives and establishment Republicans that could complicate efforts to wrest control of the Senate from Democrats.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a leading voice for Tea Party conservatives in Washington, has made an aggressive bid to defeat Jon Bruning, the front-runner in the primary, because of lingering doubts about his commitment to conservative principles.

Some Republicans question whether DeMint’s strenuous intervention will do anything more than alienate a likely future colleague.
“There’s no question he’s the front-runner,” said David Kramer, a former Nebraska Republican Party chairman who ran for Senate in 2006.
“There would have to be a monumental effort for someone other than Jon to be the nominee,” he said, predicting Republicans would win in November because “Nebraska is a lot more conservative than it was 18 years ago,” when Kerrey last won election.
Yet conservatives remain concerned about Bruning’s record, and the candidate has been dogged by questions over how he amassed personal wealth while serving in public office.
“A question a lot of folks have deep down inside is whether Jon will cast a vote because he thinks it’s the right thing or because it’s the right thing for Jon,” Kramer said.

Here are aspects of Jon Bruning’s record.
In the state legislature, he supported increasing the state sales tax and proposed increasing car liscence fees. As Attorney General, he doubled his office’s budget. In addition, he supported appointing Eric Holder as U.S. Attorney General, he supported the Obama Stimulous plan, and calls for increasing Federal gasoline taxes. Also, he has ammassed a fortune while on the public payroll and has been charged with conflict of interest in at least one case.

I have no problem at all with Deb Fischer. Either she or Don Stenberg would make a good U.S. Senator.

Do you think Stenberg has a chance? He would be an excellent addition to the Senate.
I think he has a shot. Jon Bruning’s support is widespread, but very shallow. The outcome could be decided by late deciders.

The problem is you need to get behind the ONE strongest competitor to Bruning or Bruning will win.
Since Stenberg is getting the support from DeMint etc. he might be the guy to get behind.

“Non-Nebraska readers who are not familiar with these candidates, know this: Bruning is every bit, or more, the conservative that Stenberg is. Nebraska Republicans are scratching their heads at the contention that Bruning is somehow not conservative enough. The only reason DeMint latched onto Stenberg is because Stenberg is horrible at raising money, and DeMint knew that he could personally fund the Stenberg campaign, and thereby own Stenberg, should he win. To somehow suggest that Bruning would be “anti-Tea Party” in the Senate is a joke. The non-Nebraska support in this race is purely about the Senate power battle that DeMint is waging against the leadership.
Oh, and DeMint was endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in the past as well.”

No, I don’t believe it is. Bruning was a liberal many years ago. Bruning supported a number of Obama appointments, including Eric Holder. Also, he appears to have ethics issues.
Now, if we just could have done this with McCain in 2010. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

The guy sounds downright ratty to me.
I don’t know much about her but the likelihood is she is gonna come in third and maybe cost Stenberg the win by spitting the anti-Bruning vote.
The headline is bull BTW, this primary is the election.

Yes, definitely we don’t want the conservative vote to be split. Let’s follow Jim DeMint’s lead and all support Don Stenberg. It will be great to see a crop of TRUE CONSERVATIVES reinforcing the ones we currently have in the Senate. No more CINO/RINO-lites in the Senate to support McConnell!
