President Barack Obama, courting young voters crucial to his reelection, told a rowdy college-age crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday that he knows first-hand about the burden of student loans because he only managed to pay his back a scant eight years ago.
"Michelle and I, we've been in your shoes," Obama, who turns 51 in August, told a cheering, capacity crowd of 8,000 at Carmichael Arena.
"Check this out, all right. I'm the president of the United States. We only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago. That wasn't that long ago. And that wasn't easy--especially because when we had Malia and Sasha, we're supposed to be saving up for their college educations, and we're still paying off our college educations," he said.
The president's emphasis on his modest upbringing seemed designed to invite comparisons to presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The White House has denied specifically targeting the multi-millionaire financier with such attacks even as the Obama campaign has pointedly attacked Romney's personal finances.
Obama's stop in North Carolina was the first on a two-day, campaign-style swing through battleground states to reengage young voters who powered his historic 2008 campaign but seem less enthused about the 2012 election. His chief policy message was an appeal for Congress to pass legislation to stop interest rates on a popular student loan from doubling July 1 from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. "I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this," the president said to laughter from the crowd.

Tony Rezko paid off my student loans eight years ago.

“We [Michelle and I] only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago. “
Isn’t that when George Soros started fire-hosing money to him?
I'd love to see how he paid for his undergrad degree.
I hate to do this, because it’s just not me to criticize typos and misspellings. However, this one is so glaring. It’s not payed, it’s paid. I hope my little reminder helps you in the future.

I thought he said just last week that he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth - somebody had to give him his education - it’s time he releases all his records to the public so we can see just exactly how he did manage to afford his degrees at some of the priciest schools in the country.......
Poor little Barack.
“Check this out, all right.”
So presidential
Let’s see the proof.
The BOZO (head muslim in charge) living in the white hut never had a loan from anyone, he was given his degree by affirmative action gifts to magic negro’s.
Blow it out your ear, Obamaloon.
Like anyone actually believes you any more.
You lying sack of sh...er....socialism.

Occidental College in California: A reporter should pin Obama down and have Obama explain if he got a student loan at Occidental College. The reporter should then ask: If he did get such a loan, would he give reporters permission to look at his loan papers at Occidental?
A reporter should also ask Obama when he started paying off his Occidental loan, because I'm thinking that Obama must have been in a lot of debt if he had college loans at Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard Law School.
Did Obama receive help at Occidental as a foreign student?
If Obama would allow reporters to examine his loan papers at Occidental, the question of whether or not Obama received help as a foreign student would be answered.
Of course, don't hold your breath, because Obama will never voluntarily allow the public to examine his Occidental loan papers for obvious reasons: Information in those loan papers could do severe damage to Obama's political career.
It could have been worse - see post 2 (paided)
I think in the spirit of openness and transparency he would show the kids how much college cost him and the strategy he used to pay off the debts.
All the FAFSA docs I’ve ever seen explicitly say for U.S. citizens only. Typically, foreign govts (if not the students’ families) pay for their students who study in the U.S. Also, many U.S. colleges/universities like to claim they have students from X countries studying there, and will supplement what a foreign student cannot afford.
His typical white grandmother was the VP of a bank. His grandparents were much more his family than their daughter was. he also went to a prestigious private school in Hawaii.
The Saudis have unlimited cash, so my guess is his tuition was "well paid" in advance (so the college would overlook "stuff" in case he failed or never showed up). My guess is he's talking about his wife's loans? Why would he owe anything as a foreign exchange student sent here by the very, very rich Saudis?
