With the state's Republican primary looming next week, GOP leaders gathered in Midtown for their annual dinner Thursday night as all thoughts turned to presidential politics. NY1's Bobby Cuza filed the following report.
Newt Gingrich isnt giving in, at least not until Mitt Romney has the required 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination.
Mitts not yet at 1144 [delegates]. And as you know, this is a big sports town. And you have no obligation to quit until the games over," Gingrich said.
Gingrich spoke to NY1 Thursday during a two-day swing through New York ahead of next weeks primary. While hes promised to pursue his campaign through the August GOP convention, he also says hell get behind Romney if he wins the nomination and concedes that could come sooner than later.
Well see," Gingrich said. "I mean, if Romney gets to 1,144 before then, you have to accept mathematical reality. And Im a party loyalist, and I very much think we have an obligation to beat Obama. So I am going to do everything I can to make sure we win the election."
In remarks at the state Republican partys annual fundraising dinner Thursday night, Gingrich addressed what he calls a failure to talk honestly about radical Islamists, taking a swipe at Mayor Bloombergs response to the failed car bomb in Times Square.
The mayor promptly goes on TV and says on CBS, We shouldnt rush to judgment. It could have been somebody whos opposed to Obamacare," Gingrich noted. "Now I want to make two points about this. The first is, statistically, to the best of my knowledge, there have been thousands of bombs in the last decade from radical Islamists. And to the best of my knowledge, there have been no bombs by people opposed to Obamacare."
Still, its clear Gingrichs campaign is at this point, mostly symbolic. Even State Republican Chairman Ed Cox, who introduced Gingrich, is backing his rival.
In the end, Governor Romney is our nominee going forward at this point," Cox said.
While the results may not ultimately carry much significance, the Republican presidential primary will take place next Tuesday here in New York and four other states.

Newt and Sisyphus. Birds of a feather.
I like Newt, but to equate him with a mythological hero shows more support than I can muster. What a fan you must be!
Go Newt.
Go Newt!!!!!! Stick with it, Newt — we’ll all be waiting here for you at the other end!!
In the end, Governor Romney is our nominee going forward at this point,” [Ed] Cox said.
The convention in Tampa is 4-months away. NO ONE has been nominated; no one has 1144 delegates. Anything can happen in the meantime, for that is the nature of politics.
Those people who say Romney is inevitable should not be in positions of power within the Republican Party.
Power to the People!
For those of you who think this way I can understand it, but apparently what you and Newt fail to comprehend is we are living in an irresponsible uncultured era! Romney is not better than Obama because he is an ENEMY inside our camp! He and the rest of the GOPe need to be brought down and then we can get on with winning for the long haul.
We as the republican party and America will never win with Romney, the GOPe has screwed America again!!!
Those people who say Romney is inevitable should not be in positions of power within the Republican Party.
Try telling that to the "Lessor Of Two Evil" voters, so painfully duped out there.
Stay with us Newt, we are here for you.
GO NEWT GO......
Mitt Romney must win over 60% of all remaining hard delegates to secure the GOP nomination. Surprised?
19 states still need to be heard from, and of those states 869 hard delegates are available at the state and district level (discounting the 37 total delegates available between Indiana and Arkansas, which have proportionality rules only a democrat could love). State and committee GOP delegates number about 69, which Im throwing into my calculations as a given for Romney.
Nevertheless, Romney still needs 663 delegates to reach that magic 1144 number. Redstate
"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain." - John Adams
It looks like far too many Americans are studying the third group instead of the first or second.
I think we all need to be sending a contribution. He’s hurting for money.
Mr. Cox I live in the West and YOU and your ILK on the East Coast are not going to FORCE me to vote for YOUR choice!! You might be in for a big surprise!! 2016 looks like third party time.
I sent one earlier today. Working the phone banks is a good thing, too. His campaign is being supported virtually entirely by small donors.
So; ‘what’ is Ron Paul up to? Seems no cares; nor are they counting his hours. . .Newt; otoh . . .
Yes, Newt is talking about finally winning a third state — Santorum’s little neighbor of DE, a liberal stronghold.
BEtter be in it to win it.
I just ante’d up again but, am still left with an uneasy feeling regarding their little “miscommunication” mishap from yesterday.
Is Newt buying TV or radio ads? Or is he just raising funds to pay down campaign debts? If he’s no longer buying ads, his campaign is over and this is just about the money.
Mrs. Adelson just gave his SuperPac another $5 Million or maybe it was $7.5 Million. Of course the media are not reporting that information but the news article is posted here.
I think by VinL. I know I read about it earlier today (meaning Saturday).
