Peng Tang, a 21-year-old student in the University of Iowa, has been charged with the first-degree kidnapping and attempting to bribe the alleged victim in a case that has become a big story in China, according to chinaSMACK.
Tang has pleaded not guilty to first-degree kidnapping and was charged on April 13 with solicitation to commit an aggravated misdemeanor and tampering with a witness or juror, according to The Daily Iowan.
Tang's parents, who arrived in Iowa on April 5, were also charged with attempting to bribe the alleged victim and are both being held at the county jail on $100,000 bonds.
Tang was charged on March 30 for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman while viewing her room for a potential sublease after responding to an ad she posted on the Chinese social network Renren.

Tang reportedly admitted to police that he had sex with the woman, was carrying handcuffs and a knife, and placed his hand over the womans nose and mouth to keep her from screaming.
Tang then reportedly sent a letter from the Johnson County jail to a friend asking his friend to find the victim and tell her that if she drops the charges, tells the police she lied and says that the sexual act was consensual, then "he can promise her anything."
Says one commenter on a Chinese news website: "Has to be the child of a government official or of the rich, used to running amok in China without consequences. Abroad, they wont tolerate this kind of behavior."

Is Tang the Chinese translation of Kennedy?
The reason why your kids are turned down by american univeristies is because they accept chinese students, like this guy. For every one of these foreign students studying in your schools, an american kid is turned down and must look elsewhere for an education. Soon american schools will be, like canadian schools, institutions run primarily to service the chinese.
If Obozo had a son he would...
I wonder how long it will take for this scum to be deported after serving his sentence?
Chinese students reading about this case have been very favorably impressed by the fact that unlike in China,
the powerful cannot buy their way out of trouble.
They say this kind of thing wouldn’t happen at home (the case would be covered up).
Someone should tell her to shut-up, don't say anymore in public and get a lawyer.
Given that this is a rape accusation, I am tempted to give the accused the benefit of the doubt. The primary difference between the rich and the poor in China consists of the rich having more money. The less well-off are not necessarily more ethical. There is a non-zero possibility of the victim having second thoughts after a consensual encounter. Rape accusations are a permanent black mark even if the accused is judged not guilty after a trial. It's possible that she lured the parents stateside to discuss a payoff in exchange for not filing false charges, then stiffed them after negotiations broke down over the size of the payoff. In other words, she may have wanted an exorbitant amount they weren't prepared or were unable to pay in order to prevent her from filing false rape charges. The Duke lacrosse incident isn't some kind of unique phenomenon.
The police have no evidence of her doing anything unlawful though.
They do have evidence of unlawfulness on the others.
We'll probably never know the outcome because it will disappear from the news.
While I understand the anonymity requirement for rape victims stateside, it does have the effect of reducing the adverse reputational impact on women who successfully file false rape charges. Bearing false witness carries no personal cost apart from the time involved and the rigors of courtroom interrogation. In countries where accusers are identified, very few people file rape charges unless rape has truly occurred, because once the charges are filed and their identities disclosed, the notoriety of being rape victims stays with them the rest of their lives.
More like obstruction of justice/witness tampering.
what did his brother Poon have to say?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The same as his cousin, Tang.
That is really the thing.
To quote Alan Dershowitz....
“The problem is the high-wire dance is going to be very hard to orchestrate here. Because nobody can say: I will give you a million dollars, $2 million, $3 million, and you have to not testify. Thats obstruction of justice, thats a crime. So the request essentially has to come from the victim. Did you ever hear of the concept of the Shabbos goy? The Shabbos goy is when an Orthodox Jew wants the light to be on, on a Saturday, and he sees a Gentile. He cant ask the Gentile to turn on the light, because that would be a sin. But he can say to the Gentile, Boy, its really dark here. And then the Gentile has to come up with the idea, Hmmm, it would be nice if I turned on the light. [The defense lawyer], because hes an Orthodox Jew, understands that he needs a Shabbos goy here. He needs somebody who will understand that he cant ask for something that he wants. And what he wants is for this witness to go away.”
If she is a Chinese national, she will have to make it go away. The US will not back her up and there will be consequences at home, to her and her family.
"What's happenin', hot stuff?"
My question was really just tongue-in-cheek. I wonder if the foreign family knows the rules though?
The first thing they (or anyone else) should do in such a situation is HIRE A LAWYER.
The Lawyer will no doubt (if it is in both the defendant and the victim's interest) make noises that it might be nice if nobody had to go to trial - and then the victim's lawyer could offer an out-of-court settlement.
Just going up to the victim and offering them money is obstruction of justice.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
Their intent was to obstruct justice - and they pursued that intent with criminal acts. A lawyer could have walked them through that particular minefield safely and they could have (no doubt not for the first time) paid to get their son out of trouble. Instead now they are ALL in trouble with the law.
Here in America I call that a “RIN RIN Situation!” ;)
Is University of Iowa where a Chinese graduate student killed a noted science professors and others? Seems it happened around 1990.
