Eagerness seen as Vice in Presidential VEEPstakes
The Washington Times ^ | April 8, 2012 | Stephen Dinan

While Mitt Romney finally looks to have the Republican nomination within his grasp, the jockeying among the wannabes for the No. 2 spot on the GOP ticket is only now ramping up. Some of those considered to be in the mix are playing it cool: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida have said they don’t expect to be picked. Others, such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, pointedly say they would have to consider an offer if it’s made.

“The wannabes would be wise to hang back, play it cool...“No one likes the over-eager beaver — particularly one angling to become the next vice president of the United States.”

The political oddsmakers at Paddy Power, an Irish bookmaker that takes bets on things such as the veepstakes, released odds last week that made Mr. Rubio the clear favorite at 2-1, followed by Mr. Christie at 5-1 and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez at 11-2. In a surprise, Paddy Power said Sen. Rand Paul — son of Republican presidential hopeful Rep. Ron Paul — is fourth most likely, with odds of 15-2.

Emilio T. Gonzalez, a former Bush administration official who does political commentary for Univision, wrote a column for the network last week saying the party needs to look seriously for a Hispanic for the No. 2 slot, and offered Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval as a stand-in should Mr. Rubio not be the right fit this year.

Mr. Gonzalez told The Washington Times that Republicans do have a problem with Hispanic voters, and that the party needs to become pragmatic in looking for a good messenger. He said Mr. Sandoval, a Westerner of Mexican descent, can punch a hole in two areas where Democrats have been gaining.

If you have the time, read the entire article. Very informative. Rubio is still my choice but Nevada Governor, Brian Sandoval might be a good backup.

Not a surprise to those following the closeness between Ron Paul and Milt.

It should be seen as a serious defect. Given how few VPs ever become P getting the VP spot is the peek of a career, and it’s a crap job for 4 to 8. Anybody that actually wants to peek at #2 enough to publicly vie for it is probably not somebody you want to tie to your campaign.

What part of Natural Born Citizen don’t these prognosticators understand? I love Marco Rubio, but he is not a natural born citizen and therefore ineligible. Neither is Nikki Haley, or Bobby Jindal.

Who will stand up for the Constitution?

If Christie is chosen, they could call the ticket “Porky and Bess” in honor of Mitt's effeminate appeal.

Romney needs an attack dog.

Hmm who would do that job best.

My vote would be Newt.

I'd make him the highest paid press secretary in history. He'd be worth every penny.

Makes no difference to me if Mitt is the nominee. I don’t care even if others act outraged and claim that not supporting Romney is equivalent to supporting Hussein.

Mr. Christie said he doubts the other Mr. Christie — the governor of New Jersey (the two are not related) — makes a Romney-headed ticket because Republicans won’t want two moderates.

Moderate? Romney is a liberal. Period. The question is, will he further snooker Republican voters by selecting a more conservative VP. I have my doubts.

I believe Sandoval is a liberal who is pro-abortion. Many conservatives like myself would not stand for that. People who are fiscal conservatives only might be ok, but this would destroy the enthusiasm of a good part of the GOP base. I do not know if the Republican party has even nominated someone for President or Vice-President who is not pro-life.

Now Rubio and Martinez are both pro-life Hispanics who are also from swing states like Sandoval so if Romney is going to pick an Hispanic, I hope it will be one of them. Rubio of course is from the largest swing state of all, with 29 electoral votes.

I am not thrilled with Rubio endorsing Romney, but I will still vastly prefer him over Sandoval.

What?!?!

You won't vote for liberal just because he has "Republican" next to his name on the ticket?

Well, at least you don't have a taste for Kool-Aid.

He should pick someone with a similar outlook. Somebody that really liked TARP and Romneycare. Probably Christie. Too bad McCain's too old.

If anyone of them have half a brain, they will run from romney like he’s the plague.

I'd be fine with Christie. The way they are going to destroy romney will be such that anyone associated to him will be political poison for the duration of their career. I'd be happy to never have to listen to his bloviating again.

Thanks for the input on your Post #13. I’ll check out Sandoval’s Pro-Life/Choice stance.
