NBC News' decision to air an edited call from George Zimmerman to police in the moments before he shot Trayvon Martin was "a mistake and not a deliberate act to misrepresent the phone call," according to the president of the network's news division.
The edit in question, which aired on the network's flagship "Today" morning show last week, made it appear that Zimmerman told police that Martin was black without being prompted, when, in fact, the full tape reveals that the neighborhood watch captain only did so when responding to a question posed by a dispatcher.
Under growing public pressure to explain the incident, NBC News President Steve Capus provided Reuters with the fullest explanation to date of how the edited call made it on air and what the network is doing to prevent such a consequential error from happening again.
Capus confirmed a previous Reuters report that an internal network investigation had determined that a producer made the editing error, and that the network's editorial controls - including senior broadcast producer oversight, script editors and often legal and standards department reviews of sensitive material to be broadcast - simply missed the selective editing of the phone call.
Two sources at the network told Reuters the Miami-based producer of the segment had been fired on Thursday.

As was the NBC rigging of trucks to explode.
As was the Richard Jewel stories.
NBC makes so many mistakes it should not be allowed to air news.
Oh how I wish I could be on the Jury of the Defamation Trial. Guilty, Guilty with malice of forethought!
Want to bet no one was fired?
That will determined to be another error in a few weeks.
No one can name the producer that was fired.
How can they fire a guy for making a mistake and not face a nice law suit?
But will they report this story? OF COURSE NOT!!!

(Youtube has been taking it down, the Left is already trying to bury it...)
A “mistake” they felt compelled to repeat on about 5 separate occasions.
Remnant of Hillary and her "I don't recall" days.
It is preposterous to be believe that that edit was done without the realization that it was an act of pouring gasoline on the fire. You’re correct. NBC News are liars.
As I understand it NBC claims the call was edited because of time constraints. Just how long did it take for the 911 operator take to ask the question, maybe 2 seconds?
I pretty much call it BS.
George Zimmerman needs to sue NBC.
If he does NBC will settle.
Good ole liveleak. The execs and mgmt are mostly conservatives. That vid will never be erased.
Let’s assume for a moment that it was a mistake — a mistake they repeated several times. Doesn’t that mistake show that NBC news is completely incompetent at reporting the news? How could anyone, with more intelligence than laundry detergent, not know that the edited version would inflame racial tensions? Shouldn’t news editors — and even the hairdos and haircuts who read that news — be more intelligent than laundry detergent?
Pure crap!
If they didn’t pull this all the time, maybe, but they DO this constantly.
NBC is guilty of fraud!
Yep, NBC is lying.
And ABC did same thing with view of back of Zimmerman’s head, saying it did not have a wound. Photo edited it.
Is this an indication of multi-Media coordination? From Where? Is this being scripted and directed from the propaganda agency in the White Hut??
You tell me.
This is an insult to all Americans. I can’t believe NBC actually believes that all Americans are dumb enough to believe this explanation.
They’re parsing: Editing the tape was not a mistake, but playing the tape was. The person that PLAYED the tape is in trouble. Do I have that right?
Messing with a 911 tape WAS purposely criminal. Too bad NBC won’t get in trouble for it.
I have been waiting for Richard Jewell’s name to come up. I remember that interview with Katie Couric. I had been a fan and quit watching the Today show after that. All I could think was that I didn’t think that poor man had done anything but try to protect people..... and she just bullied and badgered him and continued accusing him and maligning him. They destroyed his life.
Perhaps I should be thankful because I learned to be suspicious of everything I see in the news.
“As part of the investigation, the producer who edited the call was questioned extensively about motivation, and it was determined that the person had cut the video clip down to meet a maximum time requirement for the length of the segment - a common pressure in morning television - and inadvertently edited the call in a way that proved misleading.”
Pure lies! The morning shows spent more time on this for 2 weeks than any other story.
Might want to keep our eye’s peeled for this “sacrificial lamb” producer. Bet he’s got something to say about this whole thing.
