it was a long time ago but iirc it was a PBS FrontLine round table about reporting on war and went somethinmg like this...

A uniformed Captain ask Mike Wallace if he would let a US patrol get killed in the ambush he was reporting on from the other side.

He replied he probably would keep quiet because he was a reporter and not a combatant. He was then ask if the ambush was blown and now he was captured and screaming for help, should the soldiers rescue him to which he said "yes he was still a citizen."

The Captain raised his arm and pointed the stump of a wrist where his hand should be and said "Mister, we'd do it, and some good men would probably get killed… and you AREN"T WORTH IT!!!"
Needless to say he had no reply, you could hear a pin drop.

The ambivalence I feel is poignant to say the least. Chris came out pretty good but Mike did a lot of bad things when he invented/perfected the “jump out from behind a bush and gotcha” mode of “investigative reporting.”

As with all, I leave it to God to judge his soul but I personally won’t bless Mike’s works.

According to the obit on Wallace by the Associated Press, he described his politics as "moderate."

Maybe it was because he reached his peak in an earlier era, but I don't seem to recall him as the kind of lefty propagandist that's commonly employed by CBS News nowadays.
