Surgery bans elderly patient over her carbon footprint
An elderly woman was ordered to find a new GP because the “carbon footprint” of her two-mile round trips to the surgery where she had been treated for 30 years was too large.

Avril Mulcahy, 83, was told to address the “green travelling issues” over her journeys from her home in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, to the West Road Surgery. The surgery wrote to Mrs Mulcahy, telling her to register with a new GP within 28 days.
The letter said: “Our greatest concern is for your health and convenience but also taking into consideration green travelling issues. Re: Carbon footprints and winter weather conditions, we feel it would be advisable for patients to register at surgeries nearer to where they live.
"We would be very grateful if you could make the necessary arrangements to re-register at another practice.”

2 miles?!? THIS is too much of a ‘carbon footprint?’ I do not comprehend how ANYONE can choose to live in such a society. Oh, right, they’ve been disarmed.
I am not sure but the article says, “because the “carbon footprint” of her two-mile round trips”. It may be poorly written, but to me that says she is only 1 mile from her physician.
Global warming should take care of the winter weather problems and walking a couple miles is good exercise. Is the doctor prescribing reduced exercise?
My doctor is about 10 miles away. The nearest hospital is about 5 miles. Using that logic, should a emergency arise it would be too far to treat AND save the earth.

I've been alive along enough to remember doctor house calls. So much for that.
This may be an example of a caution to some elderly. Some of them tend to become “crusty”, and exhibit bad social behavior. And while they can get away with this with most people, medical people already have a lot of stress, so decide they don’t need the aggravation.
Several things, justified or not, that can tick off doctors include:
1) Hypochondria and demands for unnecessary tests and treatments. Telling the doctor their business.
2) Asking that adult children or friends attend consultations with them (often because they are hard of hearing or are not understanding new information as quickly). Some doctors see this as “ganging up on them”, prior to complaints or even lawsuits.
3) Abrasive personalities.
It often serves as a red flag to an HMO if a patient switches doctors or is handed off more than a time or two. It can get them labeled as troublesome, and the HMO will look to getting rid of them.
There is a general growing disdain for caring for the elderly in the medical community, so if you have elderly relatives, if they must go to the emergency room, be sure they have a younger escort to insure they get prompt and effective care.

This is just absurd. Maybe Al Gore can pay for her medical care with the money he’s made from the carbon credits scam.
We escaped our European roots 250 years ago. Please, let’s keep it that way.
People here have NO IDEA what Nationalized Healthcare is really like. All they hear is ‘free’. Everyone’s taxes will go up 10-20%. You have no control over the care you get. No second opinions, etc. No choice of doctor. Pray the SCOTUS throws the whole thing out!
2 miles is nothing. It’s just an excuse.
I travel more than 2 miles to my vet.
