The United States has underestimated the growth of China's military as policymakers have taken public statements at face value or failed to understand Beijing's thinking, a study said Thursday.

The report prepared for the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission said the United States had a mixed record on predicting the rising power's new weaponry, including largely missing the emergence of more advanced submarines.

As for the speed of military modernization, the study found "identifiable cases of miscalculation" with China developing anti-ship ballistic missiles and stealth fighter-jets earlier than the United States expected.

And Obama wants to unilaterally disarm our nuclear arsenal. What could possibly go wrong?

China is building zombie mega-metropolises with no residents.

Whatever they're doing with the military, it is no different.

They can spend all the money they want on a zombie military, it doesn't make it functional.

I totally agree. If the crap quality products we get from them are any indication then their weaponries and military are not going to be any different. In fact they are still relying heavily on old and ineffective Soviet-Russian military technologies for the vast majority of their weapons.

If US continues to decrease military spending while China continues to increase military spending, what is the long term expected result? Some variant of Red Dawn??

The underestimates are coming out because nobody wants to hear about emerging threats. Since the end of the Cold War, the drumbeat has been cut defense procurement so we can make room for social spending and tax cuts. Liberals and conservatives alike have been urging the cancellation of stealth aircraft programs because smart bombs mean we will fight future wars with drones, A-10’s and B-52’s. One thing’s for sure - cutting the F-35 buy to a few hundred aircraft should help to make future engagements with non-banana republic adversaries a lot more interesting.
