Sometimes one just has to do the math, so for tonights post I will do some simple math.
The Equation: 60x60x24x365= 31,536,000
There are 60 seconds/minute and 60 minutes in an hour. That means there are 60 x 60 = 3600 seconds in an hour. Multiple that by 24 gives us the number of seconds in an day 86,400. Multiply 86,400 by 365 which equals 31,536,000 which is the number of seconds in a year.
The total approved expenditures for the Federal 2011 budget is 3.36 trillion dollars. Written another way that is 3,360,000,000,000 dollars. Dividing the number of dollars by the number of seconds per year provides the number of dollars spent per second.
3,360,000,000,000/31,536,000 = $106,544.90 spent per second

Or about 25 times the value of the world's gold production for the entire year!
I use seconds (time) to illustrate how much the millions, billions, TRILLIONS really mean. The next level is not a round up it is 1,000 times the last!
1 million seconds = 12 days
1 billion seconds = 32 years
1 trillion seconds = 32,000 years
Does anyone in Washington, DC know or even care about this when increasing the DEBT or budget deficits?
The answer is NO.
Another way of looking at it:
In one year, light travels 6 trillion miles.
In one year, Congress spends roughly 3.5 trillion dollars.
That means Congress spends a dollar in less time than it takes light to travel two miles.
as long as people continue to care more about how many times someone has been married than their vision for America, we will continue down this path.
And another way... over $10,000 per man, woman and child every year. When is it enough?
What a brilliant perspective!
(I didn’t mean that as a pun, but it works)
Try this:
Google the thickness of the rag/paper that the BOE uses to make paper money.
Pretend that the BOE still prints $1000 bills (Nixon stopped it).
Calculate how deep a pit would be required to bury 3 stacks of $ 1000 bills as follows:
1.) 1 million dollar value;
2.) 1 billion dollar value;
3.) 1 trillion dollar value.
Then sit down and sip on a Shiner Bock, maybe two - - -
A dollar bill is .10mm thick; at 2.54 cm/in, 1 inch = $254, 1 foot = 12 * 254 = $3048
The deficit for this year = $1.3 TRILLION; can’t call it a budget deficit, because the Senate hasn’t passed a budget in 1068 days.
Deficit/day = $1,300,000,000,000/365.25 (in round numbers)
= $3,559,206,023 = $3.6 BILLION/day borrowed
/hour = $148,300,250 = $150 MILLION/hour borrowed
/min = $2,471,671 = $2.5 MILLION/minute borrowed
/sec = $41,195 = $41.2 THOUSAND/second borrowed
Converting into feet, the deficit is increasing at a rate of
41,195/3048 = 13.52 feet/sec
13.52*60 = 810.92 feet/min
810.92 * 60 = 48,654.94 feet/hr or, in MPH,
48,654.94 / 5280 = 9.22 MILES per hour
Or, looked at another way, since Nancy Pelosi took office, the debt has nearly doubled, from $8.6 TRILLION to $16 TRILLION ($7.4 TRILLION increase)
The average distance from the Earth to the moon is 238,857 miles.
Converting from miles to feet, we get
238,857 * 5280 = 1,261,164,960 feet
Converting the distance to the moon in dollars
1261164960 * $3048/foot = $3,844,030,798,080
Converting this figure into lunar distances (trips to the moon)
7,400,000,000,000 / 3844030798080 = 1.925 trips
THAT IS, a stack of dollar bills representing borrowing since January 2007 (NOT spending)
= almost from the equator to the moon and back
At current rates of borrowing the stack will return to earth in
2-1.925 = .075 lunar distances
.075*238857 = 17,900 miles
17,900 miles / 9.22 MPH = 1941.36 hours
1941.36 = 80.89 days
In other words, our hypothetical stack o’ debt (TM) will get back to EARTH around July 25, 2012 - and begin its next orbit.
And this debt is being financed by the Fed buying 61% of all debt issued, at extraordinarily low interest rates. When interest rates go up, the rate of increase in the debt will increase, too.
And this debt does not include any state or local debt, or the unfunded pension liabilities of government workers...
Cloward-Pivin aims for the collapse of society; now it is not a question of IF, merely WHEN...
Thanks! Your math is impressive!
My question however, remains un-answered:
” - - - Calculate how deep a pit would be required to bury 3 stacks of $ 1000 bills as follows:
1.) 1 million dollar value;
2.) 1 billion dollar value;
3.) 1 trillion dollar value. - - - “
BTW, I can picture 3 holes in the Earth easier that the speed of an object. Thanks.
BTW, BTW, as you know, each money pit is 1000 X deeper than the previous one. The point of this exercise is to point out the spacial visual difference between the “illion” prefixes that Federal politicians do not understand.
BTW, BTW, BTW, the Crust and Mantle of the Earth is 2880 Kilometers thick - - - . So don’t forget to sit down after the calculation sinks in- - . A Shiner Bock will help - - -.
