SAN ANTONIO-- Justo Flores said many people should have known the Mission Del Lago Golf Course and the surrounding area was a zone-of-danger.
The golf course is city-owned and privately operated. It opened in 1989. The shooting range which operates within a few miles of the course opened about 35 years ago.
On March 4 Flores was hit in the chest by a stray bullet. An x-ray shows the bullet lodged in his sternum.
"I heard two whizzing by my ear," said Flores. "Looked down at my shirt and I saw smoke coming out and my buddy goes, 'Well, I think you got shot.'"
Flores said he didn't know what had happened. He and his wife are expecting their first child in July and he says he didn't want his wife going through it alone.
"It was burning...still pain and throbbing and now I've got this tingling in my hand. I never had before and I'm having trouble sleeping at night thinking about what could have happened."
Attorneys for Flores said A Place to Shoot needs to make some safety improvements. The shooting range has closed its rifle ranges by court order.
"They need to make A Place to Shoot, a safe place to shoot," said Attorney Will Allan. "He is fortunate, he is blessed that it didn't hit somewhere else. It could have been fatal and he's got a child on the way. He's married and it could have been a lot worse had he passed away due to a gunshot wound that he sustained to his chest."
Flores was only on his second visit to the golf course.
"The city, the management at the golf course and the shooting range should have seen it coming," said Flores.
Attorneys for A Place to Shoot said there is no evidence the bullet came from the shooting range.
"There's been two incidents and those two incidents have been within the last week, so I find it rather strange that in the last 20 years we've had two," said Attorney Robert Wilson.
That is a LIE. There would be no smoke after two miles.
This guy got some quack doctor to lie for him, is my belief.
Shut down the Golf course. The Range was there, first.
That’s a tough course. I have a hard enough time shooting par without having to dodge bullets
The smoke was from the doobie residue in his lungs.
Two miles is a very long way. When I saw the headlines, I assumed that they were next door.
No way that a bullet could travel that far, unless the shooter deliberately fired it at a high angle, rather than anywhere near the targets.
It should be easy enough to check out. Does the rifling on the bullet match any of the guns in use on that day? I strongly doubt it. More likely some drunken illegal or drive-by gang banger was celebrating the coming of spring by firing his weapon at random.
Which means the gun-grabbing City liberals actually shot someone - presumably intending to kill him - in order to get public outrage enough to shut down the range and attack the Texas law protecting them.
You know, it surprises me that there was a time in my life that I would think such a brutal, murderous, psychopathic political strategy couldn't be true.
Now it's just obvious.
The tougher the course, the better the golfer.
Someone tell him to just take the stroke next time instead of his seventh "mulligan". He'll live longer.
Maybe they should try this at the Masters. Water hazards, sand traps, and stray bullets. Let’s see if these pro hot shots are really as good as they think!
Std Army Range Safety Fans for 7.62mm is 5,288 m deep. About 8,000-10,000 for 50 cal armor penetrating rounds depending upon elevation and density of air.
So a M-14 with match grade ammo can tumble a round out to about 17,349ft.
Most ranges now have lead catching devices due to environmental regulations, so there really isn’t a need for impact areas deeper than the butts in more metropolitan areas.
We lose our rights because of a few idiots. Another place I shoot, the EPA is looking to shut it down, because of the shooters who bring junk up there, like old TV sets and washing machines, etc, to blast. Fine and dandy, but bring a garbage bag, and take your crap home with you. But they don't. The place looks like a garbage dump sometimes, and the forest rangers are stuck cleaning it up. The few slobs give the gubmint excuses to take our rights away.
Texas is a strong property rights state. Rifle Range needs to show it isn’t allowing firearms/ammo to be used which exceeds their range safety fans. Since their name implies a “Rifle Range” it would probably be prudent to show both 7.62 and 50cal rifles would be limited by the range safety fans.
It appears the golf course is just barely outside .38cal range but well within 5.56 and 7.62mm rifles ball ammo range.
More interesting than the golf course is the nearby airfield. Probably uses VFR rules. Circling patterns would very likely overlay the range safety fans for even weapons with a lesser range.
It might well have been shut down for political correctness or noise complaints.
It wouldn’t have been for noise complaints, because there is an AF small arms range even closer to any housing than the private range was. They stay busy, less than three miles from me, and I wake up to the sound of gunfire every morning (they do trap and skeet on the weekends). Love it.
I've never understood why adults would engage in such a massive waste of time, money and resources. Really puzzles me.
A good question, as both involve intense concentration and eye/hand coordination.
I think it is part of the overall progressive gestalt, where golfing is an *acceptable* leisure activity, but *riflery* is not.
