WASHINGTON (CBSDC) A majority of Hispanics do not like being called Hispanic.
According to a new poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, 51 percent of Hispanics do not like to be categorized as Hispanics or Latinos, saying they like to be identified from their familys country of origin.
Only 21 percent of those polled identified themselves as Americans.
Hispanics and Latinos are split as to whether to identify themselves as a typical American. Forty-seven percent of Hispanics and Latinos identify themselves with the term, while another 47 percent of those polled find they dont seem to relate to a typical American.
As it comes to speaking English, nearly 90 percent of those polled believe you need to learn the language to succeed in America, but they also want to hold onto their Spanish-speaking roots. Ninety-five percent of Hispanics believe it is important to speak Spanish in the U.S.

We've allowed so many into this country that only want what the country can give THEM. They care not one iota bout America.
Once the lifeboat sinks, they'll simply attempt to swim to another lifeboat.
Richard Nixon came up with “Hispanic”. I’m surprised only 51% object to being called that. All of the Latinos I know prefer to be called Mexican, Cuban, etc....
Count me as part of the 21%
Oorah!
We’ve allowed so many into this country that only want what the country can give THEM. They care not one iota bout America.
This article misrepresents the issue. Our town was Mexican before New Mexico was a state.
I wish all American families were as loyal and connected as these Mexican families are to each other. Hard working and patriots.
Which is a very valid point of view.
Mexico is quite different from Cuba, which is not Puerto Rico nor Venezuela.
There is no country called Hispania.
Of course I’d like it a whole lot better if they preferred being called “Americans”...but I digress.
i agree. not being a smart aleck but how do you tell a mexican from a columbian. ans is a citizen of madrid a white european or hispanic (as in living in the former roman province of hispania)
I like “Barrio People.”
I call BS. The term Hispanic garners more respect than Latino. latino typicall refers to illegal alien.
CBS is goebling.
Mexico may be very different from Venezuela, but the people I know from Latin America have a lot in common. I was at a birthday party last weekend where everyone spoke Spanish but came from a couple different countries (and several did not have good papers, I’m sure). We spoke a bit about politics and they saw themselves as a common group apart from Americans (by which they meant white Americans, African Americans are “negritos”). The kids all spoke both languages and spoke English without an accent.
In another generation or two it will be different, no doubt. But today, first generation immigrants see the world that way.
how they pronounce ‘z’. but that leaves out the basque provinces, aragon and catalunya.
Los Locos for any other than American.
Maybe they would prefer ‘White Hispanic’.
Ok I'll call you ILLEGALS...is that OK?
As it comes to speaking English, nearly 90 percent of those polled believe you need to learn the language to succeed in America, but they also want to hold onto their Spanish-speaking roots. Ninety-five percent of Hispanics believe it is important to speak Spanish in the U.S.
Ok.. can I speak Welsh, Italian and PEQUOT?
If the affirmative action benefits were to be dropped as well, I’m sure 80% would prefer to keep the term “Hispanic”.
lol...
I'm NOT Hispanic
I'm NOT Latino
I'm NOT Mexican-American
I'm Mexican
I'm always halfway tempted to ask them what part of Mexico they're from. :=)
It's always nice when some of these people who speak English/Spanish, speak Spanish right in front of English only people, including their own coworkers.
Rude does not begin to describe this behavior.
Of course, when tens of millions totally disrespect our rules, laws and borders, this kind of behavior should be expected.
