NORTH BEND, Wash. -- A homeowner shot and killed a man who broke into the bedroom where the homeowner and his girlfriend were hiding.
The incident started just after 11:30 p.m. Friday night in the 300 block of SE 5th St in North Bend. A woman called 911 and said that an unknown man was pounding on her door and windows, yelling to be let in. Deputies arrived and didn't locate the suspect but heard a large crash and then banging from a nearby house.
The police dispatcher told the deputies that she just received another 911 call from a nearby house in the 400 block of SE Orchard Dr. A couple had been sleeping when they woke up to the sound of glass breaking. The suspect had broken the rear sliding glass door, entered the house, and then started "trashing the house."
The couple, a 46-year-old man and his girlfriend, hid in a bedroom as they talked to the 911 operator.
The couple told police that they could hear the suspect ransack the house. The suspect was yelling, "Where are you? I'm going to kill you!"
The man living at the home retrieved a handgun from his nightstand and yelled numerous times, "I have a pistol. Get out of my house!"
The couple in the bedroom continued to hear the suspect ransack the house and yell that he was coming after them.
West said within a short time the suspect kicked the door down and at that point the homeowner fired several shots, killing the suspect.
"What's interesting in this case is that the homeowner showed incredible restraint," said Sergeant Cindi West. "The suspect had broken into his house, had said 'where are you at I'm going to come get you,' the homeowner said 'I got a gun you need to leave or I'm going to shoot you,' the suspect kept saying ... I'm gong to come mess you up, where you at, and the homeowner repeatedly told the suspect to leave or he would shoot him," said West.
It's not known if the suspect was armed.
"Regardless of whether he was armed or not the homeowner did the right thing," said West. "This guy showed so much restraint. He could have shot him earlier, based on the situation at hand but he didn't. He waited and waited and waited and gave this guy the opportunity to leave before he finally said I have no other choice."
West said the homeowner and his girlfriend are very shaken up and don't want to go back to the house.
Great when a story has a happy ending -— but I don’t think I would have yelled back at the intruder as did this homeowner. I would have preferred the element of surprise when the perp broke into the bedroom....but all’s well that ends well !!
However the homeowner better hope he’s not Black and the stiff is otherwise someone better make a holiday inn reservation for Al and the other race pimps!
The guy would have found himself dragging around some German Shepherds here at our house. If he got by the dogs,I’ve got a 12 gauge surprise for him.
Actually, calling the police helped with understanding what happened. As to actually helping him during the emergency, no, not so much. You only call the police after the emergency or the police call the undertaker afterward.
Most of the time the Police are an “after the action” result of criminal activity. As to protection - it is up to you!
Notice that the police were close enough to hear the crashing of a window but STILL couldn’t get there in time!
Same here. Except I lost my 12’er in a tornado or fishing mishap, keep forgetting....:)
It is a very good idea to choose the battle space if you can. Holing up in a bedroom, ready to shoot when they come through the door is a good plan. The temptation to go out and investigate can be overwhelming, though. And of course, holing up is only sensible if you're the only one in the house.
“The real reason for the 2nd Amendment.”
Not quite right but personal protection, or self defense, is related to the real reason for the Second Amendment. Hint?: We also need protection from our government. Its been said a million times but maybe you have never heard that the 2nd Amendment guarantees all of the other amendments.
How can the police suggest the victim acted appropriately. We don’t know the race of the perp.
