NBC to do ‘internal investigation’ on Zimmerman segment
washington post ^ | By Erik Wemple

Posted on 03/31/2012 8:40:58 PM PDT by DeaconBenjamin

NBC told this blog today that it would investigate its handling of a piece on the “Today” show that ham-handedly abridged the conversation between George Zimmerman and a dispatcher in the moments before the death of Trayvon Martin. A statement from NBC:

“We have launched an internal investigation into the editorial process surrounding this particular story.”

Great news right there. As exposed by Fox News and media watchdog site NewsBusters, the “Today” segment took this approach to a key part of the dispatcher call:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.

Here’s how the actual conversation went down:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.

Dispatcher: OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?

Zimmerman: He looks black.

The difference between what “Today” put on its air and the actual tape? Complete: In the “Today” version, Zimmerman volunteered that this person “looks black,” a sequence of events that would more readily paint Zimmerman as a racial profiler. In reality’s version, Zimmerman simply answered a question about the race of the person whom he was reporting to the police. Nothing prejudicial at all in responding to such an inquiry.

In an appearance on Fox News’s “Hannity,” Brent Bozell, president of the conservative Media Research Center, called this elision on the part of ”Today” an “all-out falsehood” — not just a distortion or misrepresentation.

And it’s a falsehood with repercussions. Much of the public discussion over the past week has settled on how conflicting facts and interpretations call into question whether Zimmerman acted justifiably or criminally.

There is absolutely no doubt NBC edited to alter what really took place. It can’t be claimed this was simply an editing error. To believe that one would have to assume these are not professionals doing the editing, that they don’t think about context. They of course do this day in and day out for a living and knew exactly what they were doing.

oh, so now you are saying NBC is like Charles Manson? Just kidding you. But... if this leads to riots and people get killed perhaps there is a point to be found there.

That Hottie Florida AG should be drawing up the papers right now. Suing NBC/GM for all their worth for enticing a riot.

NBC just made Zimmerman a very wealthy man.

That is, if he lives long enough to spend any of it.

What do you expect from the network that has Al Sharpton as a commentator.
I will not call him Reverend because he is not a Reverend.
The idiot said Jesus was homeless and that is why he was born in a manger.
A true Reverend would know better. . . .
They were on their way to Jerusalem to pay their taxes. . .

NBC simply wants to know who gets the raise for inflaming the situation.

I HOPE ZIMMERMAN SUES THEM OUT OF EXISTANCE

This is one of those things which should take them down once and for all. There should be class action suits, boycotts, firings of executives, editors, and operators, all for trying to incite racial strife!

How many advertisers will pull their ads, stations stop carrying them? This is the difference, we won't go out into the streets and protest and raise hell about it when other groups would.

I say boycott this network and sue them into oblivion for this! In fact, other media should be getting the same treatment for this mismanagement and irresponsible reporting!

So much for Comcast coming in and cleaning up the NBC "News" operation.

I think NBC has answered by tagline question, they are evil.

Rights are not absolute -- freedom of the press is just too dangerous. After all, the founders could never have forseen cable news, the 1-minute news cycle and fully-automatic assault printing presses.

Therefore it is abundently reasonable to require members of the press to acquire a license after mandatory training in slander, libel, and the definition of the words "true" and "false" along with a two-week waiting period.

Breaches truth like the above quoted will result in permanent loss of license and lifetime prohibition from owning and/or accessing the means to disseminate public information for life.

Let's see, find Richard Jewell's lawyer, who got millions out of the media.

Here's Wikipedia excerpt:

"Richard Jewell v. NBC

Jewell sued NBC News for this statement, made by Tom Brokaw, "The speculation is that the FBI is close to making the case. They probably have enough to arrest him right now, probably enough to prosecute him, but you always want to have enough to convict him as well. There are still some holes in this case". Even though NBC stood by its story, the network agreed to pay Jewell $500,000.[9]"

Ooh, Lin Wood, Cain's lawyer, was Jewell's lawyer in all his libel suits. Most settled for undisclosed amounts. And here's the funny last sentence: "Jewell's case became an example of the damage that can be done by reporting based on unreliable or incomplete information, and "led to soul-searching among news organizations about the use of unattributed or anonymously sourced information.""

Yup, media "soul-searching" is as effective as Obama's "civility lectures".

“...an “all-out falsehood”...such a nice term - why not call it what it is - a lie...”

I saw that segment - within a few minutes the term ‘lie’ was used...

Have you seen this? It talks about the ‘other’ MSM ‘falsehoods’

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2865973/posts

When they heard the name George Zimmerman of Florida the Left immediately thought they had an eighty year old retired Jewish Democrat accountant originally from Queens New York.

They thought maybe George Zimmerman was a runaway from the Democrat’s Jewish plantation (Bob Dylan’s real name is Zimmerman after all) who had gone NRA gun toting Republican TEA partier on them.

They were wrong.

George Zimmerman is a 28 year old self identified brown skinned Hispanic Democrat who they wish was an NRA member. He tutors Black children in his home and is not a TEA partier.

They looked at the picture of Trayvon Martin and fooled themselves into believing he was an angelic youth headed for Harvard someday. Instead they got a budding thug who had a series of scrapes with authorities that included possession of burglary tools and drug possession.

They thought they could find evidence that Zimmerman was on top of Martin punching him and calling him the “N” word. Instead they have an eye witness backing up Zimmerman’s claim of self defense and the “N” charge is just a dream.

They thought his neighbors would tell reporters Zimmerman hated Blacks. Instead they have a Black character witness for Zimmerman and his Black friends and family.

They thought they would have a White Police Chief who would kiss their feet to keep peace – and his job. They lost that on day two. They now have Black Chief so that angle is gone.

They thought they would have two justifiably shell shocked parents who would do whatever they were told. Instead they got a pair of opportunists who have even less shame than would be Puppet Masters Sharpton and Jackson. They have copyrighted their son’s name and quit their jobs to promote the sale of “Trayvon” merchandise.

They thought they could bring in the Black Panthers to scare White people then go away. Instead they got the Panthers putting a bounty on Zimmerman and threatening to burn down Detroit.

They thought Zimmerman would be living in a “Lilly White” gated fortress that screamed “Minorities keep out.” Instead they got a community that is more than half non White.

They thought they could get Black celebrities to jump in and add strength and lust to their circus of lies. Instead they got a dimwitted Spike Lee tweeting a wrong address for the lynch mob to descend upon ,and Lee is now on his way to a nasty losing lawsuit.

They thought they could get a bunch of Black high school kids to peacefully march to protest what had happened to “Brother Trayvon.” What they got was a pack of wilding animals who ransacked a Walgreens after their march.

Now they are all so eager to wear hoodies to show they are “down for the struggle.” Do you want to bet the hoodies end up being made in non union sweatshops in some third world country?

This is too rich.

Right on! I think we should stop saying he is in “hiding” and start saying the more accurate: in “exile.”
