Making houses and cars smokefree is the only way to protect children from second-hand smoke, according to a new government campaign in England.
The TV and radio adverts show how pervasive invisible second-hand smoke can be.
Breathing it in can damage lungs and cause cancers, research has shown.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health said it wanted to see smoking in cars made illegal, when children are present. "I have no doubt an outright ban on smoking in cars would have the same positive results [as banning drink-driving] - Prof Terence Stephenson Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health
Professor Terence Stephenson, President of the RCPCH, said: "The state does have a duty to protect children's health and intervene where necessary.

Indeed, my Mom smoked around me in the car and the house all the time when I was growing up. In the car, she cracked the window, but nonetheless, I’m sure I had exposure there.
And here I am, without a hacking cough or lung cancer, apparently none the worse for wear.
“I can not drop off or pick up my grandkids from play group. Because I am male. That is not an assumption, that is a direct quote from the playgroup leader.”

Your other comments were proof of the insanity we are living with today, but not being able to pick up your own grandchildren makes my blood boil.
Can their fathers pick them up?
Is this legal?
I’m still smoking and will be 80 my next birthday.
Raised 5 healthy kids,all non-smokers.
The entire 2nd hand smoke thing is pure b*******.
Congrats on having a 100 year old grandmother——pretty neat.
Yep.
We had a conversation about this last week. Something reminded me of taking our then 9 yo daughter to a birthday party. I knew the mom, I knew the child, blah, blah blah. But I was on my way to work and told the mom that my husband would be picking her up. She looked at me and said "I don't know him, I hope he won't mind when I ask him for ID." I was dumbstruck. I finally collected myself and informed her he was her father and her own daughter knew him.
Is this legal?
Yup
“”I don’t know him, I hope he won’t mind when I ask him for ID.””

Astonishing.
Too bad men are the people who know how and are willing to kill the people who would harm other people for numerous indeterminate reasons for the sake of protecting their own people.
I cut her some slack because she had just gone through a really nasty divorce and custody battle, but I find it so disconcerting that so many people just assume a husband is not the father or a wife is not the mother.
It used to be the norm...........
How about paying attention to that kind of stuff and stop inventing BS like threatening to take away children because a parent smokes.............DUH
Sorry for my rant, but this hits too close to home for me.
Let’s see. As smoking bans have uniformly increased, at the same time people have also uniformly gotten fatter. I propose a theory...
Or even when there probably is causation, the risk increases from 1 in 100 million to, gasp, 10 in 100 million or something and of course they report that as "a tenfold increase in risk". (Which it is, but who cares, given the absolute magnitude of even the new, increased risk.)
That's when you tell him that you don't accept the authority of someone ignorant enough not to know most of those kids live with, gasp, males, to make or enforce rules of any kind.
Thanks for the ping!
Got no scientific proof here . . . but my dad smoked constantly (a pipe, not cigarettes) and I was sick for weeks every winter with bronchitis. (I would miss school for a couple of weeks at a time, even taking boatloads of antibiotics. Nowadays, they probably wouldn’t let me move up a grade for missing too much time!) When I moved away and went to college, with no smoking in my dorm room . . . my every-winter bronchitis went away! Like magic!
Adults can choose to live, or not live, with a smoker. Kids don’t have that luxury. It’s not really fair to make your kids endure your smoke for the sake of your convenience.
I am convinced second hand smoke is good for you in the way that small amounts of influenza strain are good for you. It acts as immunization.
Unfortunately it is a very good playgroup otherwise, and easy walking distance for the kids.
The group leader just takes her responsibility seriously - there was a sex abuse case last year in the other local playgroup, which was forced to close.
I just go down with a neighbor, and she brings mine out with hers.
Tell me about it. My road tax doubled overnight. It used to be based on engine size, now it is emissions, and God help you if your car fails it’s emissions test.
Now they are privatizing the highways that our taxes paid for and turning them into toll roads. In private hands, of course.
Second-hand Socialism also kills and confines.
Why stop there? Lock up mothers who smoke while they are pregnant and those who'd seek to murder their babies with abortion chemicals.
What am I saying, I was thinking medical professionals actually CARED about kids.
Ha! Loved that one! The laugh was much needed today.
