Cure for baldness "could be on sale within five years"
Daily Mail Online ^ | 3/21/12 | Fiona MacRae

In the answer to millions of men’s prayers, scientists may have got to the root of baldness. They have identified a scalp chemical that stops hair from growing. Excitingly, drugs that block the protein have already been developed for other purposes, meaning a hair restoring lotion or potion could be on the market in under five years.

I did a search on "baldness" here and found that the cure for baldness has been said to be "within five years" since long before 2007!

I did a search through the 2007 news archives to see what other cures would be available now in 2012:

Daily Telegraph (London), 6 Jun 2007
“Cure for blindness ‘within five years’”

Daily Telegraph (Sydney, Australia), 28 May 2007
“Cancer genes identified – discovery paves way for screening within five years”

Daily Mail (London), 23 Feb 2003
“Cure for meningitis ‘within five years’”

Evening Standard (London), 12 Dec 2007
“Vaccine could save tens of thousands from diabetes” (“within five years”)

New Vision (Kampala, Uganda), 28 Oct 2007
“Trial Malaria Vaccine Works for Babies” (“useable vaccine within five years”)

South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), 8 May 2007
“Beijing targets halving of HIV cases” (“cut the infection and death rate by half within five years”

What a time we live in! Although I can’t remember seeing the follow-up reports to these that they’re now ready and available to the public.

If this is true, and by God I hope it is, I’m going to rub it all over my body so I look like a monkey.

It’s no big deal, they already got hair that will grow out of algae and ocean sponges. Eventually you’ll be able to spray your face, and have a 1” long beard the next morning. Eventually if someone desires to get hairy, they’ll even have a choice of colors.

They’ve known for a long time DHT kills off hair follicles.

The trick is supressing DHT on the scalp. You can’t get the body to stop making it because it’s a form of testosterone, but if they can prevent it from choking off scalp hair, that’d be great.

Hm. My husband was bald when I met him, twenty-odd years ago. Hard to imagine what he’d look like with hair!

My hair started coming out when I was a teenager.
My pediatrician said not to worry and told me “My best friend in college was slick as a brick, but he was a fine fellow.”

I later learned that it was caused by excess testosterone
and that it is why bald men are such sexual animals, hahaha
It must be true, as at age 67 I have a 13 month old baby boy :)
By the way, the gene for baldness comes from your mother.

They’ve known for a long time DHT kills off hair follicles. The trick is supressing DHT on the scalp.

And they've been wrong for a long time

DHT declines with age, yet the odds of going bald increases. That's a negative correlation. Which is why anti-androgens like propecia and Dutasteride have only a limited effect.

From the article

When the scientists analysed the scalps of balding men, they found levels of PDG2 to be three times higher in areas in which the hair was thinning.

This is where they got the DHT thing wrong. They found in thinning areas DHT was higher than non-thinning and assumed it must be DHT causing the baldness, when in reality it's the opposite in that it is the thinning that is causing the DHT levels to increase (Smaller hair follicle = bigger sebaceous gland = more DHT).

Let's hope the same thing doesn't happen with these PDG2 findings.

Over the span of his marrige, Al Gore has predicted the end of life on Earth within 5 years more times than Tipper Gore has said, "Come to bed Al."

“What a time we live in! Although I can’t remember seeing the follow-up reports to these that they’re now ready and available to the public.”

Articles are written to formulas. “The top 10 things you must know about (fill in subject.)”
“What your (fill in subject) doesn’t want you to know.”
“Cure for (fill in subject) within five years.”
Five years is close enough to grab the concerned reader, but comfortably far off so the writer can rest easy nobody will call him on it. The article’s source will call and complain that’s not what he said, but the check will be long spent. I’ve sold 57 articles, mostly to the local paper. I don’t recall ever using a formula because they were mostly written to the editor’s request.
