A Wisconsin man, who along with his three friends is suspected of illegally slaughtering as many as 100 deer in what prosecutors call an unprecedented "thrill-kill" spree, faces up to six months in jail.
Nathan Blaha, 20, of Hillsboro, Wis., and his accomplices allegedly wandered the backroads of Richland County in a pickup truck, stunning deer with a light before shooting them and leaving their carcasses to rot in what he called a contest to get the most deer, according to court documents.

People are so stupid as to think that they can stop quick enough going over 55 when a deer jumps out. People are so brain washed into thinking that they can go really fast, but because it is somewhere around a speed limit that means that they are safe. They don't know how to think for themselves about what speed is in reality actually safe. Trucks are the worst. The drivers often think that they are indestructible.
It's amazing how people are so concerned with their health when it comes to exercising, eating right, and not smoking but think nothing about the risks that our high speed limits are, killing hundreds all the time. Life is considered cheaper than getting somewhere fast.
I agree. There are many areas of the country (mine included) where there deer population is out of control. But the culling of the herds must be done safely, and legally. For example, one community near me recently brought in professional hunters to do the job.
The fools discussed in the article (I refuse to call them hunters) have no place in such an effort.
This wasn't the right way to go about it, clearly, but something needs to be done to reduce their numbers.
A deer IS an omnivore... just sayin’
Unlike many freepers, I think they should throw the book at these guys. If they get their hunting rights restored in a decade or so, that's fine. They do nothing but provide fodder for the anti-gun and anti-hunting lobbies.
Agreed, what these clowns did was not hunting and its unlikely that they would have seen it any different if they had killed horses, cows, or dogs.
There are a lot of deer here in Michigan but that just means we need to allow more legitimate hunting.
I live in Michigan and I only know a couple people who HAVEN'T had collisions with deer.
With that being said, I don't condone thrill kill of any animal and what these punks have done is deserving of more time in jail than what they got. Hell, the least these gutless pricks could have done was harvest what they killed and sold the carcasses on the black market.
I hope they also lost their hunting privileges for the rest of their sorry lives and had all their firearms confiscated....that's assuming of course they ever had legal hunting licenses.
They're a disgrace to the entire firearms community.
Who was he poaching from?
Who was he poaching from?
If there hadn't been a forest full of bambi around, this guy would have taken out a pasture of cows, horses, or other livestock. This guy killed to satisfy a bloodlust. Yeah, definitely the kind of behavior that needs to be encouraged.
“He committed probably the single greatest act of improving the health of the surrounding forests in the past century.”
To hell with those punks! They acted like a wolf pack in a herd of sheep with the indescriminate killing. Legitimate hunters would have volunteered to thin the herd to improve the environment AND would have harvested the meat to feet their families!

“...there is no reason for these things to be living in proximity to people.”
Indescriminate killing is not the answer! In some urban communities having too many deer, bow hunters have been authorized to hunt them, AND the residents aren’t endangered either.

Bow hunting is much safer (people tend to choose their targets more carefully due to the cost of an arrow compared to the cost of a bullet), but the fact is that those residents that aren’t in danger from the hunter instead die in car accidents with the deer. These are not endangered animals, and they are extremely destructive.
You're right. Jeff Daumer got his start that way. I suppose some here would have praised him for eliminating stray animals...
This wasn't a managed population reduction hunt, it was a slaughter for the 'fun' of killing and wounding animals.
Short hop, mentally, to doing the same from a rooftop somewhere...
Not to mention wasted meat. But I guess, bacteria gotta eat, too, right?(/sarc)
“Sounds like alot of fun...”
In the old days you would have run out of town on a rail by families struggling to earn enough to eat. In Alaska, where many villages depend on a subsistence life-style just to survive, you might even get shot yourself! SHEEESH

“I lost most of my sympathy for deer when I hit one standing in the road and totaled my car.”
He was just standing there, eh? Why didn’t you see him then? Sounds like you were messing around with something in your car, like a coffee cup, cell phone or whatever and not paying attention to your driving! SHEEESH

I disagree, he couldn’t carry 10,000 rounds anyway so give him a 20 round box of ammo, like most hunters carry! HAW

I agree whole-heartedly; but there aren’t enough hunters that can afford to pay exorbitant license costs (along with travel costs for non residents) to hunt there. Loosen up the crap regulations, eliminate high costs and INVITE us hunters to come visit. We’ll gladly take care of your problem (just tell us what we’re allowed to use when hunting - rifle, shot gun and/or archery or all three) but you folks want to have your cake and eat it too, while driving up auto insurance costs!
