I saw this yesterday. This young man has an extremely rare type of voice. He's a heldentenor.

"Heldentenor" is German for "Heroic tenor". This is the voice type necessary to sing the most dramatic Wagnerian tenor roles - Siegfried, Lohengrin, Parsifal, etc. - and some Italian roles - Otello, Radames, etc.

The note he hits at the end of the song is a B flat. He makes it sounds easy, even with his dark timbre, and he's only 17! I don't know if he's interested in opera, but if he is, he needs to be accepted into the Guildhall immediately so some charlatan doesn't get hold of him and ruin this glorious natural instrument.

The young man has some great pipes but the young lady has a problem staying on pitch.
Altogether, a stunning performance.

That was wonderful, thanks for posting!

Can either you, keypro, or Dr. Thorne recommend music to buy that is similar to this? Opera, male/female duet, fresh, maybe with a heldentenor? I want to hear more music like this. Today!

Agree with you. He is amazing ... she has her moments, but does have some pitch problems.

WOW, though!

I love Hurley.

You can always close your eyes if appearances put you off. Beautiful voice.

His voice put the orchestra to shame. Orchestra should have turned its volume down.

I awoke this morning with this song “The Prayer” playing in my head. Moments later, I came upon this video. It sorta gave me chills and a bit of blurry vision. As for this kind of music, I will defer to the good Dr Thorne.

Saw this yesterday and was totally blown away. Not knowing a thing about music, I do agree with Simon - I wasn’t a big fan of the gal.

the young lady has a problem staying on pitch.

I can't speak for her, but I would have made sure I knew the piece inside out so that I wouldn't have any pitch problems on stage. I don't have perfect pitch so I need to practice a piece until I have the tune "in my head" before I can sing it with confidence. Just my two cents.

Unless you can match his vocal quality-vibrato and sound- it is very difficult to sing with an operatic tenor. She has a pop sound to her voice and no matter how good she sings they will never match up vocally and blend.

It is also very very difficult to hear yourself when singing with someone of his vocal stature-you have to have perfect pitch because you can barely hear the orchestra when next to that kind of tenor.

The one thing I truly loved about it was I kept thinking what a sense of humor God has-he always gives heavenly gifts to the shy, the unusual looking-and then sits back and watches us just melt and see his beauty as we listen to a truly gifted singer...bravo!

Well, that makes me a bit weepy. Opera houses are waiting for this young man. Aside from Simon, I find judges on these shows so dopey.

That gal is a good friend!

She may not have been fully aware of her limitations before this. These kids are teens without a lot of training. Also it is very different singing in those conditions than singing in the classroom or the school assembly hall. I give her kudos for sticking by him and supporting him, putting herself out there for him, especially knowing how nasty Simon could be. You could see how uncomfortable they both were.
