Republicans seeking out Hispanics
The Hill ^ | 03/27/12 | Alexander Bolton

Senate Republicans want to alter DREAM Act legislation to steal away Hispanic voters from Democrats.

Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), the only Senate Republican of Hispanic heritage and a possible vice presidential pick, is working on an alternative version of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age and serve in the military or attend college.

He declined to provide any details, but confirmed he hopes to have legislation soon.

“I don’t have any specifics to announce yet,” said Rubio. “This stuff has to be done responsibly. We’re working toward that and hopefully very soon.” Sens. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) are also working on a bill, although its details are being kept secret, according to congressional sources. Senate sources expect it to be unveiled after GOP front-runner Mitt Romney has clinched the presidential nomination. A spokeswoman for Hutchison declined to comment, while a spokesman for Kyl did not respond to several requests for comment.

The efforts have unnerved Democratic leaders, who are watching warily — Democrats see their advantage over Republicans among Hispanic voters as one of the party’s greatest strengths in November.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) highlighted the worries when he warned Hispanic business leaders last week to not buy into GOP efforts on immigration and other issues ahead of the election.

At an event on Capitol Hill, Reid cautioned that if Republicans offer a new DREAM Act, it will be a watered-down version of the bill most Republicans opposed when it came up for a vote last year.

“While you’re here in town, don’t take the bait that will be given to you by my Republican friends,” said Reid,

“Danny Diaz, a Republican strategist who worked on Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) 2008 presidential campaign, said Republicans recognize they need to improve their image among Hispanic voters.

“This isn’t just about the presidential primary. This about how the party has handled the issue over the course of numerous cycles including midterm cycles,” said Diaz.

“Hispanics are concerned with the economy first and foremost, but if they perceive a party and its candidates to be hostile to an issue like immigration reform, it disallows the conversation to move forward in any meaningful way,” he added. “Republicans have been hurt by the tone and tenor of the conversation. There’s no disputing that”

Then the Republicans need to blitz the airwaves on how the democrats want an Hispanic(Zimmerman) crucified before learning all of the facts in the unforunated shooting of Martin.

Quite interesting that neither Kay Bailey nor Kyle are running for re-election - so they could care less what they help push through as they won’t be around to see the horrible results.

Lies.

They had the chance with Zimmerman but they viciously threw him under the bus instead of making even a lame defense of his rights.

Hispanic voters are third class citizens to both parties’ establishment. Behind the white and negro.

Both parties just want open immigration.

Yep. That’s one of the other problems with Rubio. He may be good in some ways, but I’ve never trusted him on this. Notice, too, the way Jeb Bush has been pushing him for VP candidate.

That’s right - give them citizenship. That way they can bring all their siblings, parents, grandparents into the country legally! Grant legality to one and you get the extended family of 25!

30 million illegals in America is enough to create nearly 50 new congressional districts (almost exclusively democrat)

Illegals are nothing but government growth hormones and anyone who supports amnesty is treasonous.

Florida Hispanics are the only ones that matter (vote wise).
California, Texas, and Illinois are already pretty much set in stone the way they’ll vote.

illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age

A problem in this is that whatever age you pick as the cut-off, there will be tragic stories from the people who missed the date by two weeks. Whatever date you pick.

Thats yet another reason why, whatever "reforms" you propose, they must be preceded by securing the border tight as a drum. Because there will always be tragic stories, new ones, whatever you do as long as the border is wide open.

Most people are prepared to be flexible when you have a few sad stories. You can't be flexible when the numbers are 20 million and growing. Cut off the flow of new sad stories, enforce the law on the rest, and the numbers of exceptional cases become manageable. Fail to secure the border, and the exceptional cases become the rule and the problem remains unsolvable.

Anyone, and I include Rubio, who proposes immigration reforms without first securing the border, guarantees that the problem is never solved. Legalize these 20 millions and there will be 20 million more right behind them.

The only answer is the simple one. Secure the border. Enforce the law. Let the chips fall where they may.

Being that most Hispanics are hard workers, they should identify with this:

From a Marine:

I was talking to a friend’s little girl, and she said she wanted to be President some day.

Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her,

‘If you were to be the President, what’s the first thing you would do?’ She replied, ‘I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.’

‘Wow - what a worthy goal.’ I told her, ‘You don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that.

You can come over to my house and mow the grass, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I’ll pay you $50. Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food or a new house.’

She thought that over for a few seconds, ‘cause she’s only 6.

And while her Mom glared at me, the little girl looked me straight in the eye and asked, ‘Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?’

And I said, ‘Welcome to the Republican Party’!

I suspect that if we got rid of illegals, we would lose a considerable number of democrat congressional districts.

I don’t understand why Republicans are determined to sell our country down the river, as amnesty would finish us off.
Chamber of Commerce whores, is all I can think of.

My, yes, ENFORCING the law is SO offensive! Gawd, I’m sick of this crap.

YES! YES! YES! Thank you! I'VE been yelling that very same thing for 3 days. Glad someone else picked up on that. This can start a "POLITICAL RACE WAR" that will only benefit the GOP. And as a............

SIDE BAR: Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic; his father is Jewish. So, the Democrats are demonstrating a preference for Blacks over Hispanics and anti-Semitism at the same time. Hell yeah; exploit this big-time. Show the DemocRATS that we can be as street-wise, nasty and dirty as they can.
