My operating theory is that he’s in the race to suck up conservative air so Newt can’t get it and then throw the nomination to Romney.
These kind of comments reinforce my notion that Santorum wants to help Romney win.

That’s my take as well. If this gets as far as the convention, I figure an 80% chance Rick will tell his delegates to support Mitt vs Newt.
With this clip of Rick and the Etch-a-Sketch and “no ties to Republicans” clips for Mitt, any intelligent voter would realize they are both idiots and vote for Newt in the remaining primaries.

If Newt was polling higher, you might have a point, but Santorum has won 11 states to Newt’s 2. The split vote with Newt has cost Santorum Michigan, Ohio, Washington, and Alaska. Santorum has continually pounded Romney and compared him to Obama. Why would Santorum attack someone he supports? Why would Santorum spend months on end traveling and campaigning away from his daughter Bella whose life is fragile? Why would Santorum continue to spend money? He certainly doesn’t have Romney kind of dough. Why would Santorum endure relentless attacks in the media and blogosphere even among conservatives? All this just so he can make Newt lose and smile and say, “Here you go, Mitt.” Do you realize how ludicrous that sounds?

It just makes me wonder whether he even has any idea what he himself does want. I rather doubt that he does. If Newt becomes the first person to win the SC GOP primary and NOT win the nomination then I may as well go and write him in as a protest, between Santorum and Obama or Romney and Obama what is the point?
