A British soldier who picked up and threw away a live grenade before it could kill him and his men is among 131 members of the Armed Forces whose heroics are being officially honoured.
Serjeant Deacon Cutterham was wading through an irrigation ditch knee-deep in water on patrol in Helmand province, Afghanistan, when the grenade came flying over a high wall to one side and landed in front of him.
He reached down to grab it and "posted" the grenade into a parallel irrigation channel to get it out of his hand as quickly as possible.

Just a reminder to my American FRiends that you are not alone in Afghanistan.
Thank You For Sharing that, and may God Bless you and your nation.
It was just on the news now, so I hunted it out to share. Something to be proud of for once.
Those men and women are the UK - not the rioters and entitled snots.
Thanks for posting. Most of us know who our true friends are.
My area is having a bunch of “Protests” right now which could very easily turn into “riots” I live in S. Florida, where the victim of a racially charged killing used to live and go to school.
So I know in my heart that there are good people in the UK too, who struggle to maintain their high moral values and ideals in the face of a deteriorating society. It’s the same here in the USA. But the media usually reports only the BAD stuff.
Thanks to you from one of the Yanks! ; )
Funny you should say that - the Trayvon story was the lead story tonight. Took the first 5 minutes of the 10 o’clock news, which is still hugely influential over here. Heck, we still get most of our news from newspapers!
Stay safe. Having dealt with riots first hand, they spiral out of control fast. All it takes is a spark.
Thanks for posting this, FRiend. Like you said, the video is well worth watching.

That is some SERIOUS reflexes! WOW!
Great story! It sounds like this gentleman deserves a medal and a promotion :)
And combine the reflexes with the initial decision of 1) run and grab and toss the grenade (grenade under the water in the ditch?!); 2) run and fall on the grenade, or 3) run away from the grenade. A brave man!
Later in the article another story:
Corporal Carl Taylor has also been awarded a Military Cross for his bravery during the incident in March last year, when he ran across open ground to rescue children caught up in a firefight.
Three boys aged between three and seven were trapped between the two sides, crouching to avoid sustained gunfire coming from the nearby bushes, he said.
He ordered his troops to cover him and decided to make a dash for it.
**************************
He said in the article “no one wants to see little kids hurt”. Although I imagine the Taliban didn’t care when they started the ambush, and perhaps even used the little boys as a diversion.
We get way too much of our significant news from your online newspapers!
Indeed.
The Media is a tool of the left here. The only reliable way to gather news is to pour over the Internet or listen to Conservative Talk Radio.
I was associated with our military and the UK military for 40 years Thank God. not politicians who in my book are not worthy to lick the mud off the boots of the guys I served with. OIF vet
Aye, I had a fair few years working with US forces - Marines, Army, SOF and Air Force. Shared bases at times, friendly bar fights, joint ops, the works. Never Navy for some reason, but friends of mine in the Royal Navy were full of praise for their counterparts.
To me, those people are the ideal of America. Most of them, including the Marine I wound up in a battle royale with one night, are still close friends.
No kidding!
I have a son in law who is stationed at RAF Waddington as a USAF exchange officer. Cheers.
