Rick Santorum's latest attempt to use a Mitt Romney aide's "Etch-A-Sketch" remark against the Republican front-runner instead gave his rival a chance to fire back on Thursday, after Santorum seemed to say he'd rather see President Obama reelected than send Romney to the White House.
Speaking at an event in Texas, Santorum again made the case that Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom's comments Wednesday on CNN about a "reset" of the campaign if Romney clinched the nomination showed the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to appeal to conservatives were insincere.
"You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there," Santorum told a crowd in San Antonio, according to NBC News. "If you're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch-A-Sketch candidate of the future."

Yet, Santorum endorsed Romney for president during the last election.

It won’t matter. If Obama wins again, he will succeed in destroying the country. At that point, it doesn’t matter how strong or weak the Republican party is because there won’t be a country left to run.
Yes, the issue now is who will endorse Romney first, Newt or Saint Rick?
It's quite possibly the most egregious Reagan Rule violation by a primary challenger ever, is what it is. And coming from the same guy who made this appeal just 4 years ago:

So let's see...Mittens hasn't held office in 4 years, nor done much other than operate Bain Capital, so somehow in that time, Obama has improved enough in Santorum's standing that we might as well "stay with what we have" over the "clear conservative candidate".

I remember the 2008 fiasco, where so many claimed that Obama winning would be good for the republican party, it would, somehow, teach the party a lesson. Good people backed a candidate and only that candidate. when that candidate failed to gain any traction, the good people supporting him claimed they would rather have Obama in office than a rino, they would rather have the republican party in tatters than have that rino in office. That particular rino not receiving support did not vote for nor support Obamacare. Of course, we have a different rino this time. But, so many are only supporting candidate X, no matter what. If that person isn’t the nominee, well, there’s no use voting, right? Supreme court nominations no longer seem to matter, right?
And when people stay home, so goes the votes down the ballot.
Yeah, Romney cares so much about too much spending that he signed socialized medicine and cap & trade into law in Massachusetts. So much that he defended the bailouts. Sorry, I don’t buy it.
And have you taken a good look at how awful his court picks in Massachusetts were? Here’s a 2005 excerpt from the Boston Globe:
“Governor Mitt Romney, who touts his conservative credentials to out-of-state Republicans, has passed over GOP lawyers for three-quarters (75%) of the 36 judicial vacancies he has faced, instead tapping registered Democrats or independents – including two gay lawyers who have supported expanded same-sex rights.
Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show.”
That doesn’t even come close to George W. Bush in my book. With Romney at the helm, the GOP will look the other way when he nominates another liberal to the SCOTUS, even if we flip the Senate.

Exactly. Meanwhile the Newt Santorum brigade has been flip-flopping all over the place,. . . Bachman, Cain, Perry, in a desperate attempt to grab onto someone they think represents them. The coffee is on and still “conservatives” can’t smell it. The no-nothings, who make up a larger percentage of electorate than we do, and who will vote this November are NOT “conservative”. Yet, we have done an amazing job of trashing the only one who can rid us of Obama. I love Starbucks, but if I know I can’t get it I’ll take Dunkin gratefully.

I agree completely with what you’re saying, as a nation we CANNOT have Obama for 4 more years, given he will get a least a couple more supreme court justices alone. If Mitt is the nominee I will get behind him all the way, because at this stage ANY gamble is better than the known.
I will also like to add this as well. I know Mitt has gone to the left, I understand all that very well, but I also understand that he was running for office in one of the most liberal states in the nation. He was being elected representing a party that starts off as a horrible underdog in that state. For him to do so he had to appeal to the middle as well, and the middle of MA is absolutely nothing like the middle of say OH for instance.
My point is I’m not 100% sure that a President Romney is going to govern anything like a Governor Romney, he was elected to represent a far left leaning state and he moved to the left to do that. He wanted the job obviously and getting it meant a lot of compromise to keep the electorate happy, which I not happy about but he did it. An unfettered Romney not tied in with such a narrow electorate like he has faced before “MIGHT” (fingers crossed) realize that he will do far better swinging to the right in these political times than to the left, and do it.
Hell, its the best guess I got other than just tossing a dart into the white pages of republican party donors and asking him or her to be our leader. Either way we are so screwed this election and its completely the republican party’s fault.
But therein lies the problem: the country-club Republicans are like weeds. Pull one out and another springs up in its place. Even if Boehner and McConnell packed their bags tomorrow, there’s no way in hell the Republicans would allow someone with the guts to stand up to Mitt Romney to take their place.
If Romney decided to nominate another flaming liberal to the SCOTUS, for instance, the GOP would at best only allows token opposition, like Nancy Pelosi did for the Blue Dogs during the vote on Obamacare. Their influence was powerful enough to make even Allen West support their rotten debt ceiling deal.
I was a R. Santorum supporter but his latest comment is so over the top that I am wondering just what his game is. Some believe it is not to defeat Obama. I used to make excuses for him getting off message and making stupid statements and pointed out that nobody has made more than Obama, who is protected by he media.
What is wrong with Santorum? He is sabotaging his own campaign and turning his campaign into a circus. He certainly is not going to win over Romney supporters.
Obama is a racist.
Obama is a muslim sympathizer.
Obama HATES America.
Obama voted for a bill that would allow children that survived an abortion to die from exposure/starvation.

Being against Romney is one thing, to claim he would be worse than Obama is foolish.

You can say that, and that does seem to be the theme here, but we’ll never know, as Romney will likely get the nomination, and the conservatives will stay home while Obama hands him his head.
Why will conservatives stay home? Simply because Romney will start lecturing the party how it needs to shed its ‘extremist’ wing (i.e., Tea Party and social conservatives). Pretty much an EXACT duplicate of 2008.
Hopefully Santorum can stay viable long enough to at least keep Romney from being the candidate - just about anyone is better (other than Ron Paul).

Santorum has displayed childish behavior that should disqualify him for political office. I was a Santorum supporter until he began making so many off the wall remarks.

Obviously, he is saying that that is what a lot of voters will be thinking if Romney dances around the issues as the Etch-a-Sketch comment seemed to indicate. Personally, I consider Milt a liberal, and a horrifying nominee. He would be the easiest candidate for the Punk to defeat. But Santorum will be voting for Romney, as will I, if it comes to that, and everyone knows it. OTHERS will not be as willing to vote for someone whom they believe will at best slow the speed of the train wreck.
