At least 3.1 million Americans are employed in green jobs, a sector that now accounts for about 2.4 percent of the nation's total employment, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The report represents the first time the department's Bureau of Labor Statistics has come up with an official count of environmentally friendly jobs, an emerging part of the economy and a centerpiece of President Barack Obama's stimulus plan.
Environmental groups cheered the report.
The report makes no assessment of when the jobs were created. But the report is sure to add to the debate over how exactly to define green jobs. Some may wonder how the report can say nuclear power plant employees have green jobs, but not workers who make bicycles.
Obama's Council of Economic Advisers has claimed that about 225,000 green jobs were saved or created through the first nine months of 2010. That figure is not verifiable in the latest report.

I see no real definition of what constitutes a “green job” in the article. Just some vague allusions as to how they come up with it.
All golf pros
All timber industry folks
All employees of town dumps, er, recycling centers
The guy who says “paper or plastic”
You will love this fron the NYT: the BLS definition of green jobs jobs in businesses that produce goods and provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources.

The CCC had “leaf-raking jobs” during the Great Depression; the Great Recession has “Green Jobs.”. Same diff.

Do "green jobs," include picking lettuce?

I saw that in the article you posted too. That’s could be defined so broadly it’s meaningless. When I was a carpenter I “conserved natural resources” by not making many mistakes. Albeit my motivation was so my boss wouldn’t put a boot up my rear end. I’m really green now. No job so my vehicles just sit in the driveway. Even better I pay no taxes to support this Gangster Government.
I heard some guy testifying to some congressional committee last year say that it included all employees in public transport. That should significantly plump up the numbers. The congressman sounded quite amazed by that clain.
So Obama wants to place his bet on a sector of the
economy that is only 2.4 percent of the labor force?
Even if he put all our money on that sector it couldn’t
produce enough to support the country.
Crazy.
Maybe they mean all the lawn mower pushers in Kalifornia.
It’s defined so broadly its meaningless AND unmeasurable. The real definition of green jobs is any arbitrary number the BLS pulls out of their arse that helps Obama to redistribute wealth and get reelected.
Some tobacco is organically grown and no chemicals are added to it.
Was everyone in that industry included? lol
3.08 Million of those jobs are Government drones on the Public Dole, I would imagine......
Grass cutters and landscapers, lawn chemical companies, golf course management, superintendents and crews. OK, it adds up! /S
I am in IT and my company considers my job green because we work with green data centers
Obama must really be desperate to recycle the nonsensical "jobs saved" argument. I thought it was booed and laughed out of existence.
Obama is just buttering up the Greens for his soon-to-come reversal on the Keystone XL.
I guess the "new workers" weren't required to do any withholding...
