New Huckabee Radio Show Moves In on Limbaugh's Turf
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 03/19/12 | Christopher S Stewart

After decades as a dominant force in talk radio, Rush Limbaugh could be in for his biggest fight yet. But the threat isn't from activist groups who dislike his conservative politics. It is from one of his own: former Republican governor of Arkansas and onetime presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee.

Starting April 9, Mr. Huckabee, a Fox News Channel commentator, will go head-to-head with Mr. Limbaugh in a syndicated radio program airing in the noon to 3 p.m. Eastern time, weekday slot.

Fat chance. Nuckabee has no chance against Limbaugh.

Maybe he should bring his guitar and sing with his guests. I can’t believe Romney can even stand the sight of him—ever since he gave votes to McLame to keep Romney from getting the nomination 4 yrs ago.

"more conversation, less confrontation..."

So that's what Levin was referring to. He kept mockingly repeating and twisting this phrase during his show last Friday. I had no idea what he was talking about, but it was hysterical.

He kept telling "Mr. Producer" he was trying to be more conversational...and less confrontational. It turns out the target of his dripping sarcasm was the well deserving Huckster.

"There will be an opening on talk radio in a few months (i.e. Huckabee will be gone). Would you like a new job?"

Thanks for the kind words, Max! I HAVE been told I have a face for radio. If you or an aquaintance happen to own a radio station, I'd be happy to create an audition tape.

LOL...there are multiple other talk shows on at the same time as Rush already. Why would this one challenge his position?

"What all you nay-sayers don’t realize is that Huckabee is a “natural,” i.e., he is extremely fluent in the English language...... In other words, don’t be so damn snug."

I would never be snug with anyone but my wife.

The idea, though, that Huckster's cornpone schtick will seriously compete with Rush is pretty amusing. I don't think talk radio audiences will be all that captivated by interviews with octogenarian singers and actors and jam sessions with Neil Sedaka.

The Huckster won’t pull any listeners from Rush.
But he might take some from Alan Colmes.

I don’t see Huckabee cutting into Limbaugh’s numbers in any real numbers. I do enjoy his Sunday show on FOX; he often has interesting guests and musical acts. But talk radio is a very different arena from an hour long tv talk show, and no one is as good as it as Rush Limbaugh.

Rush is the man, after all, who eclipsed Bruce Williams in market share/listeners/affiliates for many years. Granted, Williams and Limbaugh had different shows, but Bruce was darn good at what he did, too. To surpass him in numbers speaks to Rush’s abilities. And Huckabee isn’t on the same level as either one of them, IMHO.

Now, I *do* think Huckabee could do well in another time slot. Hannity draws 5 million listeners a week, and he’s a bonehead. Huckabee is affable and experienced enough to find a profitable market niche, it just won’t be against Limbaugh.

Ted Baxter (aka Bill O’Reilly) tried this sometime ago. Remind me how that turned out...

Ditto.

The Huck also has to go against Andrew Wilkow on satellite. Andrew is number one in that time Huck is done.

There is a real art to catch and hold an audience on radio.

Just liking to jawjack won’t cut it. Many people who have tried it fail. They think it will be easy because they like to talk.

Huck does the fair and balanced thing. That won’t hold a radio audience.

I think the people who are saying Huckabee has no chance in Limbaugh's time slot have misunderstood his intent.

First off, anyone who thinks they're going to knock Limbaugh off the air (at least without FCC involvement) is stupid. I'm certainly not going to join a “bash Rush” bandwagon.

However, what many of the commenters here may not realize is what's happened in Christian radio since Dobson left the air. There is no major national radio talk show which fills the gap caused by Dobson’s retirement though there certainly are people and groups which try to do so. I'm very much aware of the 501(c)3 concerns that Dobson’s political activism was causing for Focus on the Family and for Christian radio stations, and I'm not blaming Focus on the Family for moving back toward traditional “safe” Christians topics which are less political than religious. Dobson was coming perilously close to inviting federal litigation against Focus on the Family and the Christian radio stations carrying his program, and while Dobson may have been able to win that battle in the courts, it would have been devastating financially for the program and for lots of small Christian radio stations which barely raise enough money as nonprofits to stay on the air.

What I am saying is that I believe Huckabee has a realistic shot, not at replacing Limbaugh, but providing conservative Christian political commentary on the radio that fills the niche Dobson once filled, and doing it on radio stations which don't have to operate under the government's restrictions on 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations.

As for those who think Huckabee is boring ... well ... I guess you're just not his intended audience. Isn't capitalism great? You can choose the product that best fits your preference in a free country like ours.
