Five men walked out of the Union County courthouse $4 million richer this morning. A Union County jury ruled that Americo Lopes, 52, cheated his five coworkers and lottery pool members out of a $38.5 million jackpot. The eight-member jury was unanimous in its decision that the November 10, 2009 lottery was won on a pool ticket and not a personal ticket, as Lopes had claimed. The former Elizabeth construction worker testified that he bought 12 tickets — including the jackpot winner that day — solely for himself, even though he typically played in a lottery pool with the five men who each paid for two tickets.

Back when I worked at a place that had a lottery pool, we’d buy the tickets then photocopy them and give everyone a copy.

Wasn’t there a story about a woman winning a few million dollars and then filing for divorce without telling her soon-to-be-ex-hubby about the ticket. When it came up at their divorce, the hubby was awarded the entire amount since she lied about it. This is what should have happened to this Portugese liar. He should have had all the money confiscated and given to his coworkers.

Then ship his a$$ back to Portugal. We have enough dishonest people here.

Yes. This happened in Texas a few years back. The woman’s husband was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack at the time the winning ticket was drawn. The woman filed for divorce immediately, before he was released from the hospital. She kept the winning ticket secret until the quick divorce was final, then took it for collection. Her ex quickly figured out that they were married at the time the ticket was purchased and sued for half (Texas is a community property state) of the winnings. The judge was so annoyed at the ex-wife’s criminal behavior that he awarded the whole thing to the ex-husband.
We did something similar. The lady who ran the pool would draft a memo with all the ticket numbers and send a copy to each player before the drawing.
In the old days we would not have had to waste the court’s time. The five co-workers would have addressed the problem, and his share would have gone to his next of kin.
The article says the winner took a lump sum payment. Did he pay taxes on just the lump sum? Do each of the plaintiffs have to pay these taxes again - if and when they can collect?

Pretty much what happened. He took the all cash NOW! option, which means he only collected about 20 Mill.

If the money has been held back by the State, until the case was decided, the winners are OK.
It took 2 yrs and 4 months to get this to court. If he collected in a lump sum early on, and laundered the money; the winners could win the case but not get much out of it.- Tom
