Did you change channels when you saw that the early exit polls gave Mitt Romney a semi-comfortable win in Mississippi Tuesday night?
If so, you missed a little news. Here are ten things that didn’t happen on Southern Tuesday in Alabama and Mississippi:
1. Mitt Romney didn’t wrap up the nomination.
...2. Rick Santorum didn’t pull out of the race.
...3. Newt Gingrich didn’t sweep the South, as he’d promised.
...4. The exit polls didn’t get it right.
...5. Mitt Romney didn’t order grits for breakfast.
...6. Mitt Romney didn’t win the grits-eater vote.
...7. Romney didn’t really do well among evangelicals.
...8. Newt Gingrich didn’t pick Rick Perry as his running mate.
...9. Alabama didn’t know how to count votes.
...10. Ron Paul still didn’t win a state.

The media wrote Newt off ever since Florida. I dare say few voters take the time to follow the primaries closely, and most probably adopt the media’s meme, i.e. Newt isn’t electable. It becomes self fulfilling. If one is convinced a nominee doesn’t have a chance, no matter how good the nominee is, they vote for someone else.
Even here I see posters who still focus on Gingrich’s adulteries. Newt admitted he was wrong, repented, and apparently now lives as a devout Christian. Yet, many Christians won’t vote for him because of his past sins. Are they ignorant of scripture where it says a person who has had much forgiven is often the most faithful? Maybe they just don’t know Newt repented. Most likely they are ill informed, because even Fox News is all Romney all the time now.
I’ve lived in the South and can answer your question, at the risk of being flamed. This is the Bible belt, where a man can be forgiven for cheating on his wife, but never trusted to be alone with your own wife. According to the exit polls I saw, Santorum beat Newt among Evangelicals and the TEA Party, especially in Alabama.
What is wrong with the rest of the country could also be your question. He can hardly get out of the low teens anywhere else lately. So, I could very well be incorrect and it is something else that people do not like or do not trust about the man.
SOS. (Even Santos tonight was in shock that he won-what does that say) We are going to lose with him or Mitt. The GOP has got to come to terms and get with Newt or draft a George Allen type. We are going to lose to OBama. The turn out was very low tonight and so was it in MI and Ohio. SC had the best turnout. We have to beat Obama. He will be almost impossible to beat no matter what you think. This is very dangerous to have a weak candidate.
Congrats to Sen. Santorum.

Gingrich or Romney would make terrible presidents. We don’t need another Rockefeller Republican nominee.

I like Newt and I don’t mean to diss him, but I don’t think Santorum would be a weak candidate, not at all.
First of all, look how good he’s done with NO MONEY AT ALL, so he’s got some real appeal.
Secondly, if you are worried about demonizing by the rats, please realize that they will do that to WHOEVER our candidate is. I mean we could run a ticket of Jesus and Moses with Mohammed known to be Sec’y of State and Buddha on tap for the next nominee to the Supreme Court and they will stay say we are racist, sexist homophobes, so what’s the diff?
Santorum can paint the greatest difference between himself and Obama.
The salient question is, can we get enough White People with Only a High School diploma to the polls to put Santorum across the finish line in November?
Gingrich was the Speaker of the House before he flamed out- you can’t get more inside than that. In the 2000s, he didn’t associate with a singles conservative - he worked with Al Sharpton, Barney Frank, and Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi, who he sponsored 418 bills with, including a 1989 environmental bill to destroy the economy. And he still believes in Global Warming, and thinks he will save it. There is no one more big government than Gingrich, including Bush & Romney.
I’m in Alabama (not born and raised here).
Why do you think we don’t have bingo or a lottery, of all things ? Beautiful racetrack was built and sat empty because of the Religious Right and the Religious Right is strong, so strong that they absorb the religious middle.
The religious middle still want to go to church. if they do join a church, they will follow the practices that church condones or they’re shamed in front of the congregation and/or tossed out.
The day I arrived here the first question I was asked, by many: what church have you joined. It’s a Sorority - follow the leader and his minions or your toast.
During the first Obama Election the Black Baptist Churches beat their parishioners about their head and body.....they were going to vote for Obama or they would be shamed and banished from the Church.
Many of Black Baptists are disillusioned but guess what, they will vote for him or lose their place in the church. They live for the church.
I don't. I stopped paying attention to those stories after his daughters debunked the "divorce papers on her deathbed" hate-lie.
My real problem with Newt was:
- a) excessive proximity to all that "sweet smell of white marble" old Sen. Norris Cotten warned us about 60 years ago,
- b) his propensity for being manipulated, esp. by Slick Willie, and
- c) his insufficient answer re illegal immigration, which is a helluva problem even in his home Georgia, as whole towns have had new populations imported on top of their original residents, all illegal aliens brought in by the town's main employer. That's an existential threat to the U.S. itself that is largely unappreciated outside social-conservative circles (except for the Prog-Stalinists, who are gloating about it) and loudly scorned by the RiNO's who are very largely guilty of creating the problem.

I read/heard somewhere that the black churches are fading fast .... submerged in hip-hop culture and outshouted by Media.
I will await further validation of that idea.
If God has forgiven Newt, then who are any of us to hold it against him? However, let me say this - even King David, who committed adultery and repented, had to live with the consequences of what he did. So, in a sense, Newt is living with the consequences of his poor choices.
It isn’t just Newt’s past infidelities hurting him. His belief in global warming is also an issue. He believed this for 20 years, so much that he sat with witch Pelosi on a couch. He also was in favor of individual mandates for health insurance.
We can’t white-wash all the negatives from any of them. Each has a record, but, yes, the unfaithfulness in Newt’s past is hurting him - especially with women voters. Not everyone forgives, ya know?
You’re absolutely right about King David (and Newt). Just because someone is forgiven, it doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences for the sin. Adultery is a perfect example. A person can certainly be washed clean from adultery, but the ruined marital relationships that often result are not so easily repaired. Adultery is one of those things that will likely rear its ugly head decades after the fact, if the marriage is lucky enough to recover, so it’s better not to stray in the first place, eh?
BTW, not being married doesn’t absolve one of sexual sin, but I know you know that, too. Fornication is very common these days, but there’s a price to be paid for that. Some diseases are with you for a lifetime, and the joy one should have from their first and lifelong love can be lost. There’s no better sex than in a lifetime commitment where both partners share all their “firsts” with each other.
I strayed off point, but your point was well made. I think many of us have sinned in ways that would pretty much ruin our chances of ever running for elective office. With Democrats, sins are badges of honor, but they can be a definite end of any Republican campaign. We are principled, but maybe we should also learn to be a bit more forgiving?
