ORIGINAL STORY ...
Rick Santorum has won the Alabama Republican presidential primary, Fox News projects, and is holding onto a narrow lead in Mississippi where the race is still too close to call.
The victory in Alabama is a major boost for Santorum, a state in which he was

Well that’s going to make some heads explode around here...
Sweet! On to victory!
Great news!
Big Newt fan here. Time to bow out. I thought Newt was needed to keep Romney from amassing enough delegates. Not anymore. It’s over Johnny.
“Huge Win” “Big Win” say commentators all around on CNN, Fox, and MSNC.
The question needs to be asked: Does Adelson Help Gingrich To Defeat Santorum?
WE PICK RICK!
Fine by me, even though Newt is my guy. Rick is my backup plan.
>>I still want Newt to stay in to the convention.<<
If Gingrich’s voters would essentially split between Santorum and Romney if he dropped out, then you’re right. Tonight was a good example. Gingrich took some of Santorum’s delegates, but he also took some of Romney’s. Splitting the pie in thirds gives Romney less delegates than if it’s split into halves.
However, we’re going to hit some winner take all states, and I honestly think a healthy majority of Gingrich’s votes will go to Santorum, enabling him to win those states, whereas Romney might walk away with the entire delegation if Gingrich stays in.
Interesting situation, but I think Gingrich is about to rapidly run out of campaign funding, and that will be what does him in, and probably soon, given the results tonight.
Drudge must be verklempt.
Newt needs to stay....the name of the game is keeping romney out....Romney would love nothing more than to stand head to head with Santorum....and so would the establishment...the media etc. No Newt needs to stay just like when Newt was in the lead Santorum stayed....we’re only half way there....still time to unite when the time comes...
If he does he would be helping Romney to become a nominee we don’t want.
In related news, members of the GOP-e are stuned and cannot find their beebers.
“I still want Newt to stay in to the convention.”
Very dangerous. Realize that the majority of delegates remaining are in “winner take all” states, and that further splitting of the conservative base can only help Romney seal the deal.
I wanted Newt to garner more support and be the guy to go on, but we simply can’t have Romney. If we do, then we’re looking at Obama winning in November.

This was truly a pleasant surprise! What a night! We Pick Rick!

Newt needs to bow out before the late winner take all primaries. If not, he will hand the election to Romney. Newt bet it all on the south and it did not work. It is time to give up and support Santorum.
Well I’ve been very vocal since Santorum is from my state and not in support of him. And no I don’t need aas you say aid and comfort by any means.
You see Rick is the establishments guy to keep Newt in check....unfortunately people can’t see that. The media wants Romney or Santorum to go against Obam because they know they will loose against the Obama machine. The media is pushing Santorum or for that matter any but Newt for they know full well he can take out Obama...and what Newt would do to their comfy positions once in Washington.
Rick will play in Washingtons sandbox just as he has in his history......and will continue to do the big government things he’s done in the past...regardless of the tune he’s singing now. But he’ll never get the opportunity. Obma will have the election if Santorum gets this.
Yeah, the conventional wisdom...I can’t get over this! Wow, the voters came through despite what they were told.
I’m in shock. Good shock lol! I’m stunned!
I think Rick would sweep the South against Romney, and would do the same against Obama in November. He is a Christian gentleman of principles. He was firmly pro-life throughout his time in the Senate—one of the strongest voices in that body.
I would have preferred Sarah Palin, but in her absence, Santorum has been my first choice.
Now, I am wondering. It seems to me that I remember conventions in the past where a candidate has resigned his delegates and turned them over specifically to another candidate. I don’t think they are legally held to accept that, but it was the usual practice, with no more than a couple of defectors, as I recall.
If so, maybe Rick and Newt could quietly agree that the one who gets fewer votes than the other will instruct them to vote for the other—thus keeping Romney out and avoiding a “brokered” convention. Or, I suppose, it would be brokered, but between the two conservative candidates.
I don’t know if that is still possible, or if the GOP Establishment will intervene and give it to Romney—or Jeb Bush.
