Santorum Blasts Gingrich Over 'Romneycare'

Chris Welch Springfield, Missouri (CNN) – It's a common aspect of Republican Rick Santorum's stump: attacking Mitt Romney for creating - and then "recommending" - "Romneycare" to President Barack Obama.

But Saturday, fresh off his projected win in the Kansas caucuses, Santorum added that GOP presidential rival Newt Gingrich is "honestly not a whole lot better."

"For 20 years when I was pushing medical savings accounts, he was pushing a federal mandate for health insurance," Santorum said. "And when 'Romneycare' passed, he sent out a glowing statement talking about how this wonderful bill had just passed in Massachusetts."

Santorum argues that Obama, Gingrich and Romney all line up on the same side when it comes to their support for an individual mandate.

The campaign points to a 2006 newsletter Gingrich wrote for his consulting firm, the Center for Health Transformation, in which he praised Romney's Massachusetts health care reform.

"The health bill that Governor Romney signed into law this month has tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system," Gingrich wrote, according to the report.

Also in the newsletter, Gingrich expressed his support for the individual mandate in Massachusetts, but only for those making at least $54,000 a year. And while he commended Romney's effort in building the plan, he acknowledged the bill will likely face "tremendous scrutiny" from those who doubt the law will work.

Really? Newt's demise in the polls was of his own doing in Florida. He continues to shoot himself in the foot because his ego won't let him stop talking.

Stop blaming everyone else for Newts actions and words.

He lost a lot of us because of what he's said not what anyone else said about what he said.

Except for his home state he's had a rough time getting out of 4th place sometimes behind Rue Paul.

He does indeed go off the reservation exploring his “big ideas”; fair game that warrants criticism.

you have to admit he is getting better and more disciplined. rick is getting into the fear and crazy part of his campaign.

Newt would undo the govt part of it,

I keep being told that, but all his solutions head down the Govt' route every time. I read Contract with the Earth. This "Politik Wilsonian" is all about Govt' working efficiently instead of eliminating it. You don't tell people that FDR is the greatest President in the 20th century if you are not into this Progressive ideal.

Romney doesn't need the south now. He just needs it not to stay home in November. Now he needs to keep the not-Mitt vote split. Newt has proven he can't win anywhere outside the south, he just fights Paul for distant thirds. He's just not nominatable. Romney, alas, is and so can be Rick if Newt would get out. Rick has won in multiple regions, including the south. He'd have won even more states had a couple handful of Newt supporters been less stubborn. He may or may not be the first choice of southerners, but he's a good enough choice that they won't say home on him. Too many of the base would stay home with Mitt and let Obama win.

You seem to be hyper anti- Newt.

What did he do to you? Fire your Dad?

Newt is no better or worse than Santorum. My personal choice is Newt. But I don’t think downing the other conservative is productive. You must be exhausted. Every thread I have looked at features “Steelfish”.

You may want to take a doggie downer...we could be voting for Rick or Newt eventually.

I’m so sick of people like you distorting the facts. Are you on Gingrich’s payroll or something?

Santorum endorsed Romney for the same reason many FReepers here endorsed Romney when it became apparent that the nominee was going to be either McCain or Romney. And Santorum, based on his relationship in the Senate, hated McCain’s guts, like many other conservatives did. Would you be spewing the same crap about Santorum had he endorsed McCain? I’m sure you would have tried to link Santorum then to McCain/Feingold, McCain/Kennedy, etc. Please tell me who YOU voted for in the General Election. Was it McCain? If so, I’m going to tie you also to supporting McCain/Feingold and McCain/Kennedy. I guess Sarah Palin is for those things two since she campaigned with McCain on the ticket /sarc
So cut the crap with your “Rick was campaigning for Romneycare in 2008” garbage.

As for “taking one for the team”, that’s what Newt essentially said when he stated he would have “reluctantly voted for TARP”.

We are part of Le Resistance to deprive Romney of the nomination. That is the end game.

Le Resistance - the only resistance you are for is getting Newt out of the game, so Romney disposes of Tricky Ricky. You have got to know you have no credibility and you continually display what is worst about santorum and his supporters - THEY REFUSE TO DEAL WITH REALITY.

Do you guys want to keep playing this tear down game? There isn’t a Santorum thread anymore without you guys coming in and going to town on our guy like it came straight from the talking points of MSNBC. What is the point to it from your perspective?

A great analysis that is a must read by some of the Gingrich die-hards who have their heads buried in the sand and don’t seem to realize the enormous damage Gingrich is doing.

When did Rick support Romney in 08?

I believe it was late in the primaries where his choices were McCain, Huckabee and Romney. Of those three i may have chosen Romney too.

To me this is a paper tiger. What's next? he endorsed McCain in 08 so that disqualifies him?

The only chance of getting rid of Romney is for Newt and Rick to deny Romney delegates where they can

Then somebody needs to tell that to the Newt team! Had every Santorum voter switched to Newt in FL Mitt would have still won. But had a handful of Newt voters switched to Rick in MI and OH Mitt would have lost and would now be mortally wounded.

Sure he can because

(A) For whatever reason, Santorum did not trust Orrin Hatch to get Judicial nominees a fair hearing AND

(B) It was a Female Maine Senator (Olympia Snowe I beleive) who sided with the Democrats and voted to get Obamacare out of Committee and onto the Senate Floor for debate/vote. That single vote alone is what triggerred the ability for Obacare to pass the Senate.

What I am NOT doing is setting conservatives against one another.

I know all about Gingrich. Did you know that Winston Churchill changed between Conservative to Liberal and back again? That Sir Winston was called ‘mad’ by his contemporaries? Idea people are like that, especially when they have a decades long record for us to peruse.

How many Republican candidates running this election cycle have any record of altering Congress? Only one.

How many Republican candidates running this election cycle have balanced budgets and slashed spending? We both know the answer.

The 1998 budget was scheduled for a $1 Billion cut and congress saw the gravy train leaving the station. No more getting rich at the public’s expense. No more cutting deals with big donors for pushing legislation containing contracts, all for big $$ later - a Santorum specialty.

So it became “get rid of Newt Gingrich” even to the extent of manufacturing lies about him. Santorum was one of the long knives, you know. Those phony ethics charges that were ALL dropped, but the media continues to smear him year after year after year.

And now, older and wiser, Newt is back. And the corrupt in Washington, D.C., those feeding on the corpse of Uncle Sam, are AGAIN trying to save the status quo.

There is only one person Obama fears in this political race: it is Gingrich. Newt had BHO2 so riled over the oil drilling speech, BHO2 was blubbering about algae!

Newt Gingrich is speaking about specific remedies to the $16 TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT this nation is facing. Romney and Santorum? Crickets.

You write well, JohnBovenmyer, but you have the odor of an establishment apologist. Particularly when you slam Sarah Palin.

Just listed to the conservative political commentariat, and Gingrich is spoken off only in terms of being a “spoiler” and foil for Romney.

That is santorum's new campaign, he is employing conservative media, establishment republicans, fake conservatives, and he wants newt out, but he does have the equipment to say it publicly like a man. So he does what he always does, finds others to do his dirty work, so he can maintain his pose as Saint Rick.

Got a bulletin for you - Newt supporters, staff, grassroots, volunteers, have already been alerted of Tricky Ricky's latest serpentine move, told to ignore it, to go on a news fast, if they have to, and to just keep doing what they've been doing.

As for me, I'm doubling down. Stop saying untrue things.

If Rick wasn’t completely inept, and hadn’t blown big leads in both Michigan and Ohio he would have won. Newt barely campaigned in either.

Obama ignores Santorum, because he is no threat.

Gingrich, on the other hand, has BHO2 speaking out for algae, making himself look like a foolish know-nothing.
