(CNN) – Newt Gingrich is edging out his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination in Mississippi, according to a new poll.
The American Research Group survey of likely Republican primary voters released Friday showed Gingrich with 35% support, followed by Mitt Romney with 31%, Rick Santorum with 20% and Ron Paul with 7%.
Gingrich's margin over Romney increased slightly among those who said they will definitely vote in the March 13 primary, 37% to 30%. Santorum garnered 17% support and Paul received 5% among the same group.
The poll was conducted after Super Tuesday, when each of the GOP White House contenders picked up delegates. Romney won the popular vote in six states, while Santorum captured three and Gingrich nabbed one, his native Georgia.
Despite calls for him to bow out of the race, Gingrich has said he will remain in the contest until the convention and has also stressed the importance of wins in Mississippi and Alabama, which both vote on Tuesday.

May plan to squeeze in a few calls over the weekend and going into Tuesday.
The only ones to lose out in a Newt presidency would be the squirmin’ worms here in DC.
I wish I could show you all the Mcmansions that have sprouted up here over the past 8 years or so ... this is RINO/LIB ELITE central. So many are benefiting from the status quo, and in BIG ways ...meanwhile, the rest of the country suffers.
Newt would come in and equalize all that ...that’s why they want him out. Hold strong, Americans ...

This stuff by unspun does not represent Newt Gingrich's views, as have been repeatedly stated, about the Judeo-Christian moral basis of society.
Gingrich is not being helped by the actions of a fair number of his supporters here on Free Republic.

This is wild-eyed stuff from the 1960 anti-Catholic campaign against John F. Kennedy.
If we've learned anything in fifty years, we've learned that the Roman Catholic Church is having enough problems getting their own members to obey the Pope. He has enough problems trying to get Catholics to “obey dictates of a city-state” without trying to get the civil government of a predominantly Protestant country to do so.

I don't see Rick Santorum trying to “enact Vactican dicta” on anything other than abortion. On that issue, I trust you agree with Santorum. Gingrich agrees with “Vatican dicta” on being pro-life, so does Ron Paul, and even Mitt Romney claims to agree (though I don't trust him).
Perhaps you mean contraception? Santorum doesn't want to make contraception illegal; at most, he wants to persuade other people it's a bad idea. What he does with his wife in his own bedroom is his own business and if he wants a large family, it's not my business to tell him otherwise.
As an evangelical Protestant, if I thought Rick Santorum was trying to “enact Vatican dicta” on things other than issues on which most conservative Christians agree, I would have a huge problem with Santorum.
What Santorum does in his own personal life with “Vatican dicta” is his own business and I have no problem with him being faithful to the dictates of his church so long as he doesn't try to legally enact them on everyone else.
Keep an eye on the GOP Boss Hogg types. Watch ‘em close.
I heard a Bishop Willard ad today for the first time in Mississippi, and it was all anti Newt.
Some of you Pro Santorum supporters need to do some research once in a while. Its all over the web in fact yea go to CNN. CNN is calling it an ESTIMATE.
We have explained Hard Delegates vs Soft Delegates day after day. But some of you Anti Newt keep calling us liars and now Liberals.

When it comes right down to it, Gingrich and Santorum have both spoken quite kindly of each other. Most of the animosity comes from the superpacs and supporters.
While saying that he would consider Gingrich as a VP choice, Rick Santorum calls Gingrich a true conservative who fits the bill.

How many unpledged delegates have defected in previous primaries or what is their percentage?
Newt has proven he can move his poll numbers by campaigning in the state using the local press and getting face time to much chagrin of the Lame Stream Media and the GOP-E. He is much better at it than the rest if all other things are equal.
If he gets the nod, Santorum could do a lot worse than Gingrich on picking a VP. I know Gingrich has his personal faults and failings, but he is very smart and has ideas and plans that can turn this country away from the ruinous socialist path it is on now. We need people in power who can fix these problems, even if they are not saints in their personal lives (who is?). I know that sounds a lot like Clintonian rationalization, but at this point I must confess I am desperate enough to get Obama out of office and turn this country around that I am willing to look past those things to the more immediate and pressing need, which is to save and restore the Republic that our forefathers have bequeathed to us, and is in grave danger of being squandered and bankrupted by Obama and his socialist minions.
As a Northerner I have to sigh when I say, “Thank God for the South.”.
I’m no fan of Gingrich but honestly can’t think of anyone I’d rather see as VP to Santorum.

The ads are split between the two, but seeing these latest polls, they are likely switching there main attack to Newt.
How come Mississippi doesn’t care too much for Reverend Rick?

Newt did not support Spector who is pro choice; Newt did not vote for Sonia Sotomyer who is pro choice and less you forget Santorum endorsed Romney for president knowing Mitt’s liberal record. Santorum voted for title 10 funding...he talks the talk but he does NOT walk the walk.He is a sell out.
Ahh Good Question will have to do research at the state convention.
But it appears at the National convention. Defecting delegates may have given us President Harding.
Hopefully that momentum sweeps right into Texas.

I think it will. Right now, Texas is a Delegate “proportional” State. But, the State GOP is trying to change it to winner-take-all before the Primary. Man, if Newt can bag all 155 Texas Delegates......Katie bar the door.
This is incredibly transparent. First Santorum teams up with Romney against Newt in Florida. Has spent the past month stealing Newts ideas. At the beginning of ths week he was calling for Newt to drop out, knowing Newt is gaining momentum.. Now he wants Newt to be on his team. This clown is making an ass of himself.
