This whole spin by the Huffpo is based on these unbound delegates deciding to jump ship and back the guy running a 13 point deficit against Obummer, running 14% nationally on RCP and winning a total of 2 solid red states that even Romney could pick up in the general. Wake me up when Newt is even mildly competitive in a swing state or a place we will need to beat Obummer.

I am a Newtonian.

I am glad he has more bound delegates than Santorum.

But the fact remains that Newt finished in third place or below in 9 of 10 Super Tuesday states.

If Newt gets beat in both AL and MS next Tuesday then there will need to be a sober discussion of strategy.

Gingrich has won 107 delegates compared to Santorum's 95, according to the RNC's count, which was made after Super Tuesday. That effectively puts him in second place behind front-runner Mitt Romney.

WHOO HOO! Please, please, just get Newt to California so I can at least say I voted for him!

I would feel more comfortable if Newt would win a state that wasn’t quite so red. If Newt wins the nominee which if Santorum doesn’t, I want Newt to, he has to win something outside of deep red states. I don’t know if FREEPERS know that the general election requires that the nominee gets a total of 270 electoral college numbers throughout the United States. So the general election will be a goal of getting 270. Newt was in third place in Ohio. Can he beat Obama in Ohio? Florida? Iowa? That is the question. Santorum will win Ohio and Iowa for sure. Santorum has been winning states that we need to get to the magic 270.

Over the next few days and weeks, many of the unbound delegates Santorum has won will become bound. These are places where Santorum has already won once. Do you see Newt gaining more than Santorum in these places?

It would appear that the RNC is finally stating what you have been saying all along.

Bound/Pledged or Unbound/Unpledged is a distinction but the critical point is to whom does the unbound/unpledged delegates go to later on. A couple of other sources linked below.

The GreenPapers Tally

Gingrich Santorum Romney Paul Uncommitted

Pl Unpl Pl Unpl Pl Unpl Pl Unpl Pl Unpl
115 13 118 46 366 37 35 38 4 0

Only Gingrich has the intellect and oratorical skill to beat Obama.

Even though Gingrich has only won two primary contests, in South Carolina and Georgia, and former Sen. Santorum has won seven -- in Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, Misssouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee -- Gingrich has the lead in delegates that are solidly in his column

Santorum supporters will cry and pound the table.

They're starting to remind me of liberal Democrats screaming about "fairness." Nothing is ever their candidate's failing. It's always a Romney dirty trick or Newt splitting the vote or his volunteers letting him down or something else.

What really matters is Romney's total. The fact is, he has more delegates than all three not-Romney rivals combined. That means the not-Romney effort is failing.
