Revealed: Derrick Bell's HBO Sci-Fi Blaxploitation Flick
Big Hollywood ^ | 3/7/12 | Joel B. Pollak

Posted on 03/07/2012 9:14:04 PM PST by Nachum

Derrick Bell, the man whose scholarship inspired Barack Obama, was the Jeremiah Wright of academia.

And a Hollywood cult hero.

Bell was one of the chief proponents of Critical Race Theory, a radical doctrine that holds that American legal institutions—including our civil rights laws—perpetuate white supremacy.

Bell’s ideas were not only radical, but bizarre. After leaving Harvard (he resigned in 1992), he wrote a racialist, antisemitic fictional essay titled “The Space Traders,” which Ninth Circuit judge Alex Kozinski described in the New York Times with disgust:

Imagine, if you will, that space aliens land in the United States and offer ''untold treasure'' in exchange for surrendering all black citizens to them. What does white America do? It votes to accept the deal by overwhelming margins. So says the law professor Derrick Bell, who poses the question in an allegorical tale he calls ''The Space Traders.''

There is opposition, however. Jews condemn the trade as genocidal and organize the Anne Frank Committee to try to stop it. Empathy from another group that has suffered oppression? Not according to Bell. Instead, Jews worry that ''in the absence of blacks, Jews could become the scapegoats.''

Such parables pass for legal scholarship these days…

Check this out:

“With The People V. Harvard Law: How America’s Oldest Law School Turned Its Back on Free Speech Andrew Peyton Thomas, the district attorney for Maricopa County, Arizona, and a graduate of Harvard Law School, has put together a well-written, intriguing expose on the state of free speech at his alma mater, providing an insider’s perspective of the top law professors in the country. Oddly enough, the friction over free speech is not between the political “left” and the “right,” because there are practically no conservatives in the administration or on the law faculty, and the majority of students offered admission are also of the leftist persuasion. The battle over free speech is between the “left” and the “far left.” (p. 170) Conservatives are rarely mentioned in the book; the major players consist of traditional leftists like Alan Dershowitz versus the new leftists, known as “Crits.””

-—snip-—

“Thomas discusses several of these candidates and how Crits the administration was pressured into hiring, like Derrick Bell, ended up as an embarrassment to Harvard Law. Bell freely acknowledged that he lacked the qualifications of the other professors. (p. 34) He stated that the articles he wrote were just story telling and did not contain the academic rigor of law review articles. (p. 35) He had his students grade each other’s papers. (p. 34) He declared that liberal black professors who didn’t share his far left views “look black but think white.” (p. 37) At one point, Harvard Law assigned another professor to teach Bell’s classes for him since he was frequently absent. (p. 35) Yet in spite of the poor performance of professors like Bell, Harvard Law was becoming increasingly dominated by professors of his ideology.”

While interesting the most interesting tib dit to me was this...Thomas, the district attorney for Maricopa County, Arizona...
Article circa 2005.

Crits...how appropriate. From the article's explanation there are, seemingly, Crits right here at FR.

I like it. Beck’s writers put it in a neat organized package. The more sauce on this goose, the better.

“I have started a little research on Mr. Bell.”

I found this article on Bell’s protests at Harvard in 1992:

“...Not surprisingly, Bell’s protest has stirred angry criticism. Some colleagues call him a media manipulator who unfairly attacks the school. Others say he has deprived students of an education while he makes money on the lecture circuit. Bell, 61, has even drawn fire from some women at Harvard, who complain that he has unfairly hijacked their issue.

“This guy is a victim of his own self-delusion,” says one faculty member who asked not to be identified. “He’s an example of the Harvard syndrome: People here can say the most idiotic things, and the only reason they get into print is because they’re from the Harvard Law School.”

I love the fact that MANY more people are getting serious about REALLY vetting Obama. May God bless those who work hard to get ALL the dirt on his FULL history. May God restore honest journalism to this nation.

The entire issue of his support for infanticide needs to be revisited. I want to know if he even had the grades to get into Harvard in the first place. Without the Saudi money, would he have made into Harvard? Why did he and Michelle not continue the practice of law? ...etc....etc...

“I will say that I will gladly trade Derrick Bell and Barack and Michelle Obama to the space aliens for whatever they will offer.”

Heck, I’d throw in Rahm Immanuel, and Harry Reid to prove I’m generous.

Exactly. It's not the color of their skin that's the problem. It's the color of their snarling, hate-filled ideology.

By the way, I'm an SF afficionado, but I never heard of Derrick Bell's SF book. It couldn't have done very well.

Boring, stupid, racist.
