Gov. Jerry Brown was at the Chronicle Tuesday for an editorial board meeting (mostly to sell his tax plan), and we asked him about how Gavin Newsom is doing in the number two, largely ceremonial, spot of lieutenant governor.
The two former Bay Area mayors, you may remember, have a rocky past (in part because of personality, and in part because Newsom also had his sights set on the governors office two years ago before dropping out of the race) .
I think hes well within the tradition, Brown said when asked whether hes satisfied with the job Newsom has done.

The governor, however, then sought to downplay any rivalry, saying its more about their positions than personality.
I think we get along ok, you have to understand theres just an inherent tension, its like between the the Legislature and the governor. Eventually the relationship breaks down, thats just the way it is.
But he didnt stop there.
Theres a certain tension between those who have a future and those who are trying to prolong their past. And so that tension will always continue, he said.

In general, being Vice/Deputy/Lt anything sucks. You have no real power and are bascially the b!tch of the head honcho. And everyone knows it.
Gosh. I’d have thought they’d make a great couple.
