On Saturday, Carbonite CEO David Friend released a statement on his companys website declaring that Carbonite had decided to withdraw advertising from Rush Limbaughs radio show in the wake of his controversial remarks involving Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke because it will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse:
Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.
However, it hasnt done much to contribute to his companys stock price. Since the market opened on Monday through its close today, Carbonite stock (NASDAQ:CARB) has plummeted nearly 12 percent, outpacing the drop of the NASDAQ index in that same time period by nine-and-a-half points. It was also one of the biggest decliners on the NASDAQ on Tuesday.

Switch to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service). I priced Mozy, Carbonite, et al and found S3 to have the best price of the bunch...plus it’s by a company that really knows how to make highly reliable data centers and is going to be around. I pay about $7/month for 65 GB, I think.
If you use a Mac, get the Arq front-end software. Brilliantly simple, only $30, and flawless incremental backups after the initial backup. Upfront payment of $30 and less than $100/year for the safety of offsite storage — I love it.
PS. I use USB drives at home to make bootable image backups. But I’m paranoid about theft or fire wiping out everything I have, so the USBs are the Belts and the S3 service is the Suspenders. I like peace of mind.
High capacity external hard drives are cheap. I also use high capacity thumb drives (I have a 32GB stick that I use a lot). Even the Solid State external drives are coming down in price.
Don’t the backup services themselves use HDDs to store your data? My point being, let us not rely on any ONE back up. Personally, I use several back ups...just in case.
Heck, these days you can even create your own cloud with an external hard drive so that you can access your data remotely from an HDD in your own home.
Yes they use hard drives, however theirs are mirrored and backed up themselves. The chances of losing data in that environment are very small.
The problem I’ve had with keeping several backups is version control. Likewise, with this kind of service the file is backed up basically in real time. Manual backups are less frequent.
no refunds from what I’ve heard
yeah...wondered about that....but, they’ve never dealt with me...actually, it would be great to get them off of Ingraham and others, too....
