The Fluke Distraction
Wall Street Journal ^ | James Taranto

Posted on 03/06/2012 6:37:18 AM PST by IbJensen

There seems to be wide agreement that the Sandra Fluke kerfuffle handed the left a major political victory. We respectfully dissent.

"Conservatives and those who care about religious liberty should be dismayed by the way the left has been allowed to shield an ominous attempt to expand government power and subvert religious freedom behind a faux defense of women's rights," writes Commentary's Jonathan Tobin, reflecting the despair on the right. A Christian Science Monitor subheadline sums up the triumphalist mood on the left: "Before Rush Limbaugh spoke up, the Republicans thought they had a winning issue on contraception in health-care plans. Now, everyone is on the same side: against Rush Limbaugh."

Like Cindy Sheehan, Fluke was a left-wing activist cast in the role of everywoman (or as much of an "everywoman" as a student at an elite law school can be). "Fluke has a long history of feminist advocacy," reports the Daily Caller: "While [an undergraduate] at Cornell, Fluke's organized activities centered on the far-left feminist and gender equity movements. Fluke participated in rallies supporting abortion, protests against war in Iraq and efforts to recruit other womens' [sic] rights activists to campus." She even got a bachelor's degree in something called "Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies."

"Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school," Fluke said in her testimony. But last Tuesday The Weekly Standard's John McCormack debunked the claim:

Fluke's testimony was very misleading. Birth control pills can be purchased for as low as $9 per month at a pharmacy near Georgetown's campus.

Nine dollars a month amounts to $324 over three years of law school.

Perhaps Ms Fluke, like many other Georgetown students, needs to augment her tuition and the pills are a deductible business expense. Her parents could explain accounting procedures to her as she already knows much about the birds and bees. Likewise they could direct her to a facility where the pills could be purchased for very little or obtained free.

At any rate a marvelous career awaits Fluke upon graduation. Sandra could find a lucrative position as a call girl, but then she isn't the most attractive Georgetown coed.

This is typical. The leftists get the big MSM headlines that everyone reads.

The conservative media comes along afterwards and, lo & behold, uncovers fact revealing it was all lies and deceptions.

Problem is the leftists and MSM refuse to talk about it anymore and have moved on to the next deception.

A point Rush should have made rather than the slut/prostitute comments.

I believe he did. That was the point he was making. The absurdity of her claim it costs $3000.

I garandamntee you that most Americans are NOT feeling sympathy for an East Coast law student who is having trouble paying for her birth control pills. The problem is, though, that our bi-coastal media and the loudmouth leftists make it out to be a sacred right, and how dare, oh how dare he!, Rush Limbaugh question the RIGHT to fornicate on OUR dime!

Rush’s points were absolutely correct. But the slut comment was not even relevant, and I don’t know how he could have been so careless as to hand the left such a juicy tidbit.

The article is interesting, though, because it shows you what a set-up the whole thing was from the start. Probably not in their wildest dreams did they imagine that they’d get Rush to give them such a glorious result, of course, but the fact remains that it was all a propaganda set-piece meant to distract from the real issue.

"I have sex with women---mostly. But now I'll have to
get it on with a 1-2 disgusting men, since testifying
before Congress for free birth control."

"Yes, I'm an agent for Planned Parenthood. Planned
Parenthood buys b/c on the cheap and sells it to the
govt for big bucks."

Why do lesbians care so much about abortion? Not as if they have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy, unless somehow they accidently fall on top of a turkey baster.

The left is putting alot of energy into this, and patting themselves on the back.

Obama has even usurped somebody as commencement speaker at a woman’s college, to keep pushing the ‘mean republicans hate women’ issue.

Anybody who takes Fluke seriously wants to believe her...i.e., they are already inclined to be a leftists. I sincrely doubt that the Cinderella story of a down and out Ivy League law student, who can’t afford birth control pills will resonate with most people. So let the left keep roaring about it...most people don’t care.

Actually, I think his point was if she (or the females she was “speaking for”...) is having SO much sex that they can’t afford the BC pills or whatever and need the US tax payer to pay for them, isn’t that the kind of sexual activity that typifies a SLUT????
An indirect slur at best and said to make a point...

Rush should NEVER have apologized...

A. The Taxpayer funds Planned Parenthood to the tune of $500 million+ a year.

B. Panned Parenthood says none of that money goes for abortion services.

C. Less than 5% of the PP budget goes for womens’ cancer screening (which they manage to also claim is one of their major expenses).

D. Now Ms. Fluke steps forward and says PP has no money to provide her with birth control.

Question: WHERE is all the Planned Parenthood money going? Is this another ACORN scam? Andrew? (oh, drat, he’s gone).

You are spot on.
Progressives and the liberal media are - as Rush sez -
drive-bys. They toss a grenade in the crowd and run back to their TV’s to watch coverage on NBC and commentary by Jon Stewart.
By the time conservatives get actual facts together and craft a thoughtful/PC response, the libtards are on their way to another deception.

His real point had to do with religious freedom and also the fact that it is not the obligation of taxpayers or anybody else to pay for somebody’s contraception.

The problem was that the “slut” comment completely buried his original points. I didn’t hear it on air, but I read the text and the sad thing was that his commentary had been good - until just at the very end he came in with that comment.

Quite frankly, I don’t know how he could have handled it, because I’m sure as soon as he said it, he must have realized how it would be seized upon by the media. I think apologizing for stooping to the leftist level (since they’re always saying foul things) was the best he could do, actually, and he probably should have done it sooner, without giving the Dems several days to magnify an essentially trivial situation.

Fluke's testimony was very misleading.

It was made for the consumption of those that are easily mislead.

Rush should NEVER have apologized...

I believe Rush gave a proper justification for why he apologized. My grandfather would have called Fluke a slut, that is, in front of me and my father or male friends. My grandfather would never have said that in front of his wife or other "mixed company". I know times are totally different now, but I like to look back on his behavior as a guide. I think it was in the vane of decency that Rush apologized and not because he thought he had inaccurately summarized the proposed behavior.

Rush says off-color stuff all the time.

This time the left went after him harder than usual because they desperately needed an Alinsky target.

Why? Because they were losing the debate...and it's a big one...women's "health" is their sacred cow.

This is only a Pyrrhic victory for them. They're losing the war and they know it.
