Teacher Suspended Over Chicken Nugget Incident

School district official says substituting a preschooler’s lunch was against district policy

RALEIGH — The teacher involved in “supplementing” a preschooler’s lunch with chicken nuggets in Hoke County has been suspended indefinitely.

Parents of students in the Pre-Kindergarten program at West Hoke Elementary School in Raeford got a letter from Assistant Superintendent Bob Barnes last week saying a substitute teacher would take over the preschool class until the “issue” is resolved.

It remains unclear why the teacher’s actions violated district policy. State officials responsible for monitoring homemade lunches for preschoolers have told Carolina Journal that the Jan. 30 incident that caused a nationwide uproar satisfied state policy.

The letter (PDF) from Barnes, dated Feb. 28, reads as follows:

“As I am sure you are aware, we recently experienced an unfortunate situation where a failure to follow district policy resulted in the substitution of a Pre-K student’s lunch at West Hoke Elementary School. This letter is to inform you that Ms. Emma Thomas will be a substitute in [your child’s] classroom until we can bring resolution to this issue. We are pleased that [your child] is enrolled in our Pre-K program and we are confident that Ms. Thomas will continue to provide [him or her] with a very positive educational experience.”

The mother of the 4-year-old girl whose turkey sandwich was replaced by chicken nuggets says the teacher is not to blame and shouldn’t be punished.

“State officials responsible for monitoring homemade lunches”

So, they’re admitting they do this? This is outrageous.

U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines — fluid milk, two servings of fruit or vegetables, a serving of grain or bread, and a serving of meat or meat alternative

The cheese on the chillens sammich isn't fluid milk. So her lunch don't comply. WHO ARE THESE IDIOTS who MAKE the guidelines. Tar and feather.

Principal Jackie Samuels sent a letter home with students the next day, informing parents that homemade lunches lacking any of the items required under state regulations and U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines — fluid milk, two servings of fruit or vegetables, a serving of grain or bread, and a serving of meat or meat alternative — would have the missing items supplemented by school staff.

Can we finally say that we now either lie down and take a ravishing by the communist jack boots, or we stand up and tell "them" to stick it in their pipe and smoke it?!!!

What the hell is it going to take to wake up an American populace that's in a moronic stupor--help wanted ads for FEMA concentration camps?!!!

Fluid Milk?

Yeah, NO - no one is shoving fluid milk down my throat - I hate the stuff (especially as a kid)- it would be like waterboarding me :>)

OK, unless you put copious amounts of Eclipse coffee syrup in it. So if I can put 300 sugar calories into that ‘precious’ fluid milk then I’m OK then right? Pffew.....

Stupid stunt. The district should learn a lesson. Every teacher in the district should heed the warning.

Seems like a ticky-tack reason for someone to lose their career, though. She took the kid’s lunch ... she didn’t molest the kid.

Educating children is far too important to let the government continue to screw it up.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the Department of Agriculture the same program that is responsible for Food stamps? The very same federal program that allows recipients to buy candy, chips, soda, and gum with food stamp dollars?

If there is a policy to monitor the homemade lunches then she shouldn’t even get the lion’s share of the blame. Whoever started that policy should be the one put to public shame. And the opposition to this shouldn’t rest until that policy is overturned.

What is it with women and Chicken McNuggets? All fast food violence involves the two. Now we have what, a pusher in the public school system?

Those things are insidious. Women should stay far wawy from them. They should at least have graphic warning labels like cigarettes.

“Somebody had to fall on their sword... “

No, the turds responsible for this moronic program have pushed the teacher onto the sword. I don’t like unionized teachers as a general rule, but here this teacher (whose primary job should be to educate the children entrusted to her) got mouse trapped by the stupid, unconstitutional “nutrition regulations,” and got caught. But she isn’t the one that’s at fault. They are the one’s who expect her to take the fall so they can continue their “program” unhindered by bad publicity.

True, she didn’t sexually molest the student, but she did deliberately interfere with the parental authority to determine the child’s lunch.

As for firing education industry personnel, I’m all for it. Only ‘professional educators’ are allowed to not produce (students are all too often functional illiterates) and retain their jobs.

Since most are commies, fire ‘em all. Mark will know his own.

Unless the teacher is also this child's doctor she can't possibly know why this or that food was included in the child's lunch - and the child herself is no help here. What if the child is lactose-intolerant, for example? What if she has no allergies but the doctor recommended to stay away from this or that food for a reason that a teacher who is lacking a solid knowledge of biochemistry can't even comprehend? What if you feed a child some heavy, solid food instead of watery buckwheat porridge packed for her - without knowing or caring to know that the child is recovering from a recent gastrointestinal surgery?

Responsibility for child's diet first and foremost belongs to parents. School *may* join that circle of responsibility, if necessary, but only after learning specific needs of each child - especially when children are so young that they can actually obey the teacher and eat what is not good for them. I had some fruits on my own "forbidden" list until I got older and the body learned to deal with them.

Yes, she deliberately interfered with a lunch decision. Wrong, but hardly a high crime.

I’d say fire the ones that deserve it. If she can’t teach, can her. This lunch thing isn’t a good enough reason, though.

Then again ... my wife is a career teacher, so maybe that colors my opinion on the “fire them all” thing. Heh. But, she earns her keep, and would welcome performance-based pay. Our daughter attends the same school my wife works at. It is a high-performing public school ... 99% standardized-test passage. My daughter was reading at a 2nd grade level before her first semester of Kindergarten was over. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
