Girl Scouts: The Awful Truth
The American Thinker ^ | March 3, 2012 | Betsy M. Galliher

Posted on 03/02/2012 11:24:00 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Indiana freshman Representative Bob Morris is learning the hard way that the Girl Scouts of America is to the progressive agenda as the Komen Foundation is to Planned Parenthood, and the Catholic church (or so Obama presumed) is to an Obama abortion mandate. What is -- in one word -- cover.

....Full disclosure: I am as endeared to the doe-eyed keepers of the Thin Mint for which I would sell my soul most days as anyone. I cringed when I heard Morris's original remarks. It was just the crazy talk the left feeds upon -- and the right, consequently, takes such pains to avoid. These were the Girl Scouts of America he was talking about, for heaven's sake. Like millions of other scouts and now a parent to scouts, I've experienced only the best Girl Scouts has to offer -- lessons in leadership, character, entrepreneurship, Christian ideals, service to others, and macramé -- under the tutelage of leaders with no pretense or agenda. Frankly, what Morris was suggesting was so far-fetched that it was almost as unthinkable as suggesting that Republicans don't always have conservatives' best interest at heart; the church has been infiltrated with agents of social justice; our own prestigious military has in its ranks enemy Islamists and apologists; the public education system to which we entrust our children is full of radical, anti-American educators; the mainstream media -- the fourth estate -- is a virtual arm of one political party; women's reproductive health includes the right to practice infanticide; and Sesame Street Muppets endear children to government. What's next -- asking us to believe that the man elected to keep the American dream alive could govern antithetically to individual liberty? Shall we see if James O'Keefe can fit into a brownie uniform?....

dadfly,
Having been a Girl Scout myself (1st grade through the 10th grade) and then a scout leader for my daughter’s troop and even being awarded my local council’s “leader of the year” award one year.... it saddened me to read how the organization’s reputation is now drug though the mud.

I can guarantee you that there are thousands of leaders out there carrying out wonderful programs for their “girls” and upholding the traditional values of scouting and ignoring this “new agenda.”

Knowing this, I want to think that deep down there is some remnant of the old traditional values left in the program, though looking only at the council level one would not think so. Reading what you wrote was like “sunshine”. It was well said and I thank you.

The Left is always moving forward, experimenting....

I think of Greenbelt Maryland.

“Greenbelt was also a social experiment. Designed to provide low-income housing, it drew 5,700 applicants for the original 885 residences. The first families were chosen not only to meet income criteria , but also to demonstrate willingness to participate in community organizations. (In 1941 another 1,000 homes were added to provide housing for families coming to Washington in connection with defense programs of World War II.)

The first families, who arrived on October 1, 1937, found no established patterns or institutions of community life. Almost all were under 30 years of age. All considered themselves pioneers in a new way of life. A mix of blue and white collar workers, they reflected the religious composition of Baltimore and Washington, D.C.—Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish; but because of the racial bias controlling public policy at that time, all were white.

Almost immediately the new residents formed a town government—the first city manager form of government in the State of Maryland. They also formed the first kindergarten in Prince George’s County. During that first year they also formed a citizens’ association, a journalism club which published the first newspaper (still published today on a weekly basis as the Greenbelt News Review), and a community band. Interdenominational church services were held in the elementary school auditorium, which also functioned as a community center. The Greenbelt Health Association opened to provide hospital services. Police, fire and rescue squads formed. Residents held a town fair that first summer. In 1939 the first public swimming pool opened in Greenbelt—first in the Washington area. Numerous clubs flourished. In fact, Greenbelters were so busy attending meetings that the town council called a moratorium on meetings between Christmas and New Year’s in 1939 to permit residents to spend time at home with their families.

Greenbelt is also unique for its cooperative institutions. Boston merchant and philanthropist Edward Filene provided funds to Greenbelt Consumer Services, Inc., which operated a food store, gas station, drug store, barber shop, movie theater, valet shop, beauty parlor, variety store, and tobacco shop. In December 1941 citizens within the community were able to raise funds to purchase GCS.

In 1952, when Congress voted to sell off the greenbelt towns, citizens in Greenbelt formed a housing cooperative (Greenbelt Veterans Housing Corporation, later Greenbelt Homes, Inc.) which purchased the homes. (The other two greenbelt towns were purchased privately.) Citizens also formed a cooperative baby sitting pool, a cooperative nursery school, a cooperative kindergarten, and a cooperative savings and loan association. In fact, when Greenbelters confronted any kind of a new problem, their typical first approach was to form a new cooperative.”....

And yet, the Boy Scouts of America continue to be excoriated by the liberals as homophobic and such.

As a former Scouter, Scout and proud Father of an Eagle Scout, I maintain that the BSA is one of the key underpinnings of our society and the hatred vented against it by the liberals just proves the point.

I understand that Obama refuses to acknowledge any Eagle Scout achievements. I sent a request for a letter from former President Bush for my son and he sent a hand-signed, personalized letter that my son will treasure all of his life!

If you can wade through it. The essence of the article could have been no more than two good sentences.

The author fills it with so many similes, metaphors and parenthetical thoughts that it is nearly unreadable.

Geez. it is a report, not a drama.

I am deeply saddened by the supine Republicans in Indiana. This level of sloth, stupidity, and uxoriousness to the left is the norm in NY. These schmuck may as well be here, because there is no heartland left. The cultural left controls us even in middle America.

A simple yes/no would suffice for me:

Does the GS org allow lesbians to be leaders?

Elsie, you asked me: "Does the GS org allow lesbians to be leaders?"

I don't know. Being now 65, I am sort of out of the loop on what the GS allow and don't allow. But I can say that back when I was a leader, my plan was that if I signed up to be the leader of my daughter's troop then I could control what kind of leader she had, and we could basically structure our troop's program the way we wanted. I simply didn't allow the few lib radicals (there were fewer back then) in the council tell me how and what to teach my girls. I had a meeting with the girl's moms at the beginning of the year and asked them if anyone had a problem with our troop being structured around traditional Judeo-Christian values, no one complained... they were moms like me after all.

When my grandaughter came along, my daughter was her scout leader too.

So, Elsie, I would say to you.... we had little control about if the council allowed lesbian leaders or not. But I was not going to let that stop my daughter and her friends from having the "scouting" experience. The way to make sure they didn't have a lesbian leader was easy.... just volunteer myself to be their leader. It's so sad that outsiders see only the radical libs who infiltrated the GS and think that "IS" scouting..... but it's not! And it won't be as long as there are dedicated moms who will carry on in spite of it.

“The Girl Scout Motto: “Be Prepared” now can be “Pay For My Birthcontrol.” “

On a positive note, these groups seems to be disappearing; I think as they did less “scouting” they lost their appeal, and the immigrant “replacement Americans” don’t seem all that interested.

At least the Boy Scouts took a stand, regardless of the political (and financial) ramifications; after they did so they were booted from using a lot of school properties for meetings.

“She was a catalyst for the creation of the Raul H. Castro Institute which is a “Do Tank” focusing on issues that affect the Latino community in Arizona, emphasizing education, health and human services, as well as leadership and civic participation.”

“Returning to Tucson, Arizona in 1969 to specialize in international law, [Raul H.] Castro continued to rise to the top in Arizona Democratic politics. Seeking state office for the first time in 1974, he was elected governor, ending eight years of Republican control. In 1977, after two years as governor, President Jimmy Carter selected him to be ambassador to Argentina.”

I didn’t say that there aren’t good conservatives or traditional values in the heartland. But you are fighting a rearguard action. The left controls the commanding heights of culture: the media, education, and even many religious institutions.

Why the difference between the Boy Scouts & the Girl Scouts? Essentially it’s the influence of feminism. The Girl Scouts, like a lot of our other institutions (the media, government bureacracy, NGO’s, etc.) are bathed in it. It’s the air they breathe.

Feminism is informing almost everything our society does.

The Boy Scouts are a little bit immune from it since it’s a male organization. More difficult for the feminists to inject their “touchy-feely” agenda. It’s happening, just more slowly. The Cub Scout division has always been more vulnerable because of the influence of “Den Mothers.”

If you want a quick definition of what modern feminism entails, a good way to go about it is to look for the stark differences in the missions of the Boy & Girl Scouts.
