TRENDING: Romney Stumbles Over Question About GOP Contraception Push Rachel Streitfeld and Peter Hamby Columbus, Ohio (CNN) - Mitt Romney's campaign scrambled to clean up another unforced error by their candidate Wednesday after he came out against a controversial amendment pushed by Senate Republicans that would allow employers to opt out of health care coverage they disagree with on moral grounds.
Romney's statement, which came in an afternoon interview with Ohio News Network, quickly reverberated around the Internet and prompted Romney's campaign to clarify that the opposite was true, and that the former Massachusetts governor, in fact, supports the legislation.
"The way the question was asked was confusing," campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email blasted out to reporters after Romney's became the subject of a flurry of tweets. "Gov. Romney supports the Blunt Bill because he believes in a conscience exemption in health care for religious institutions and people of faith."
The amendment, drafted by Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, a Romney supporter, is an attempt by Senate Republicans to confront head-on a simmering controversy over rules governing religious employers and coverage they are required to provide.
The Senate is expected to take up the bill on Thursday.
The uproar was sparked by a move by the Obama administration that would have required employers to provide contraception to their employees - regardless of the employer's religious beliefs. Representatives from the Catholic church advocated strongly against the measure.

It is true that sometimes these candidates can be caught embarrassingly behind the news cycle, astounding as that is.
Hotair had this story up, and reported Romney was confused by the question thinking it was the Ohio bill, whatever that is. And the reporter asking him the question called Blunt’s bill the “Blunt-Rubio” bill, which is incorrect. Rubio is putting up his very own bill separate from Blunt, though Rubio does support Blunt’s bill, reportedly.
Romney has no clue, except there is nice trees in Michigan with the proper height, empty stadiums make great places for wonderful speeches, and every man’s wife should have 3 Cadillac... ohh yeah, he’s so in touch with the NASCAR crowd, that even though he not to familiar with it, he has rich friends who own NASCAR teams.
Agree. Santorum is the best bet to beat Obama and regain the critical Reagan Democrats and bring those pivotal rust belt states back into the red-state column. Neither Romney or Gingrich could do this.
The latest USA-Gallup has Santorum only 2 points behind Obama and he has done so with a shoe-string budget. Had it not been for a split in the conservative vote (Gingrich’s 7% of the vote and zero delegates) , he would have pulled off a major upset in MI and all but ended Romney’s chances of capturing the nomination. It is time for all true conservatives to coalesce around Santorum or we have Romney. This is the true reality. After wining S.Carolina, Gingrich requested Santorum to withdraw. It’s time for him to take his own advice at this point in the campaign and withdraw.
I hardly call RUSH 3 hours a day, five days a week, puffing up Santorum qualifies as a shoestring budget. But carry on with the massaging of the facts.
That is far less than what the other candidates are squandering on a daily basis with zero results.
Who does your calculations? I keep reading about the 'rich' helping Newt or Romney, but nobody, acknowledges the 'freebies' from Rush, that never have to be recorded. With all the FREE air time by Rush, Santorum should have won MI outright and sent Romney packing in AZ.

First off, you are reading those stories about Newt and Mittens because they are true. Rick raised 8 mill last month. He said on Hannity today that 2/3rds of that was with donations under $100. The others cannot claim that. Secondly, what monetary value do you put on someone giving support to a candidate? Newt and Mittens are getting support from others big names. What is that worth? Having Rush, Levin, Beck, Malkin et al saying positive things about Ricks campaign just shows he is the better, more effective Conservative candidate in this race in their mind. Your hackneyed, burned out sour grapes argument against Rick makes me laugh. He was outspent and slammed with negative ads in MI and still walked away with half the delegates.

I did NOT dispute the stories about Newt or Mitt.... How do you know what the others can or cannot claim about their donations? Make stuff up much?
I spoke only about Rush. And given the amount of heavy lifting explaining what we are suppose to think about Santorum, playing parts of his speeches day in and day out is NO different than being part of his campaign. AND if he did the same for Newt I would say the same thing.
Well like most of the Santorum supporters said of Newt after Florida, Santorum stunk big time in the AZ debate. There was NO sympathy about the media blitz and Rush manipulation against Newt in the Florida primary.
No. Never. Last month there was a post here that said Newt was getting 50% of his support from small donations and Milt was getting 10% of his donations from smalls. I can't find the thread, but it was a pro Newt post if I recall.

Well Rush was the one who started the meme last week that Newt isn't out of this race yet, getting many around here excited. Can you point me to your post chastising Rush for boosting Newt? Hannity pushes Newt every chance he can get. He has him on the show all the time, and it turns into Sean drooling over him. Can you show me your post on your disgust over that?
Ever since bloody Thursday before that Florida debate I maybe have listened to Rush a total of 30 minutes. I have not turn him on in the past couple of weeks. So had I heard him say anything 'positive' about Newt I would readily say so. I have lost interest in hearing about what the Jon Stewart media has to say about Rush and blab, blab, blab... I do not listen to Hannity so I cannot comment on anything he says.
Given the literal history of what Newt has lived and accomplished has had a far greater value in my life, that the combined life and accomplishments of Romney, Santorum, and Rush. Newt led the way for the retaking of the people's House and the impeachment of that gutter snipe Clinton. Once the PROUD GOP e joined forces with the PROUD DNC and ran Newt out of the Speakership, we have the 'history' of what became of the House that Newt built. They became a TARP!!!!!!
Looks to me like it’s shaping up like always with the Republican establishment. 1. They run another Dole, McCain, or George Bush, Sr. 2. I go to the voting booth, in despair over the current Democrat in the Oval Office, hold my nose, and vote for the Republican. 3. The Republican gets clobbered, gives a nice concession speech. 4. I go back home, hunker down, and keep hoping things will get better. 5. Only this time, hope is in short supply.
Speaking of TARP, that and Newt’s defense of the individual mandate has prevented him from going after Willard and Obama (who share the same stances) with any kind of success on those two DEFINING ultra-important issues.
The working for Fannie, divorces, and screwing up the government paperwork on a history course he taught NEVER bothered me at all. They are all easily explained, imho.
Here’s the bottom line. Newt Gingrich will make an outstanding SOS under President Santorum in 2013.
Speaking of NASCAR, there should be a Santorum car again this weekend.
