I"m a nurse anesthetist, and I just got a work-related email from my boss. Basically it said "please conserve midazolam, fentanyl, morphine, and hydromorphone.....supplies are CRITICALLY short & the hospital is struggling to maintain supplies".
Um, ok. The last time I checked, this was the United States, not Crapistan. How are we "critically short" on all of the major anesthesia drugs that we use??? Am I supposed to offer the patient a bullet to bite?
Are there any FReepers out there who have ties to the pharm industry and can explain this? Speaking with others throughout the hospital, I have learned there are critical drug shortages in the ICU, ER, and oncology areas.
So.. whatcha wanna score?
Sounds like what’s happening in Greece.
I wanna score a decent anesthetic for my patients. I’m serious.....this borders on unethical. People are going to begin under-dosing patients on pain meds just to make ends meet.
I didn’t sign up for this job to hurt people. I signed up to alleviate some of the pain & suffering in this world.
HHH trying to kill off the less strong.
Colonoscopy? Sure thing doc! |
I’m not in the industry but I remember hearing about a drug shortage a month or so ago.
I can’t remember the exact details but it was impacting a number of both Australian manufactured and imported from the US drugs.
Looks like there’s something wrong with the global supply system.
We are being transformed into Crapistan by the crap in the White House. And we are only just beginning.
Let Obama Care roll!!!
All part of the plan. Just wait if deathcare passes in SCOTUS.
Or he wins re-election. 3rd or 4th world country is the goal for us by this bunch in charge, plain and simple.
You only THINK we don’t live in crapistan. Such “shortages” are symptomatic of crony corporate fascism...where the little guys....keeping the big producers on their toes...get stamped out ...so the big guys don’t have to stay on the top of their game.
In a nutshell drug companies are making less of the drugs they make little money on and concentrating on making the drugs with the higher profit margin. Many of the drugs that have had shortages they make very little money on.
There is no conspiracy out there.
Whachu need?
Alonzo and Jimmy the Tooth are always on the street corner and they seem to have a ready stash.
There are shortages of a lot of popular medications. Asking at my HMO’s pharmacy, they told me that the drug manufacturers are being limited by the federal government. They are having trouble acquiring some of the chemical components of their drugs. (The pharmacist, an Indian guy, then went on a long conservative rant, which I enjoyed.) I certainly believe the first part, about the government regulating drug companies’ output. Unsure about the second part, difficulty acquiring chemicals.
I am gonna make a guess. It probably has to do with Obamacare. You know, the parts that we don’t know about that is happening behind our backs.
It’s my understanding that the DEA sets quotas for manufacturers of Schedule I and II medications. I read an article where Ritalin and other ADD drugs are in short supply because the DEA didn’t guess right.
Sounds like part of ObamaCare we wouldn’t find out about until the bill was passed.
Control of the supply by those in power. For the common good, equality and all that rot, you know.
Welcome to America in the Age of Obama. Get used to it. It is only going to get worse. Much worse.
The Obama Administration is trying to turn America into a backward, third rate country and slowly but surely they are moving America in that direction.
The Obama Administration has taken to changing the regulating the drug companies and creating all kinds of regulatory and pricing hurdles. There are also potential legal liabilities. Drug manufacturing is also moving overseas, just one more thing America can no longer do.
I have a friend in the pharma business - will ask him and get back to you.
