Iowa House Democrats leave Statehouse in protest (Demoncrats flee pro-RKBA bills, 2nd Amendment)
The Gazette ^ | 29 FEB 2012 | James Q. Lynch

Posted on 02/29/2012 9:04:22 AM PST by DCBryan1

Iowa House Democrats left the Capitol in protest Wednesday, saying they were betrayed by the Republican majority that decided this morning to debate controversial gun rights legislation.

“We’ve been doubled-crossed,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, D-Des Moines, just before he lead his 40-member caucus out of the Statehouse.

Democrats had been led to believe a constitutional amendment spelling out Iowans’ right to bear arms and the so-called “Castle Doctrine” giving Iowans the right to defend themselves would not be debated Feb. 29, McCarthy said.

However, he was told after both parties went into their routine closed-door meetings to discuss pending legislation that the gun bills would be debated “whether we like it or not.”

“I said ‘You will not be debating it today,’” McCarthy said at about 9:45 a.m. “We’ve been betrayed. We are in protest leaving the building now.”

Connecticut already has both, language in it's state constitution

"SEC. 15. Every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state."

...and a Castle Doctrine.

“Republicans hold 60 of 100 seats and could debate the bill without Democrats since they have a quorum.”

Therefore it’s desparation. It’s all show for the Liberal idiots that elected them as they haven’t anything else to gain by their walking other than “we done sumpin’”.

So this is now a standard Democrat tactic when they can't win?

Have Republicans ever fled to prevent a quorum?

Seriously, people need to start getting serious about recall elections when Democrats pull this stunt. After a few high-profile losses, it will end.

immediate removal from office sounds good to me.
Recalls for this crap should be mandated. Whatever it takes.

Start by canceling all their State credit cards, have all State issued cell phones blocked, report all State supplied cars as stolen to the State Police, stop direct deposit of their salaries, and issue warrants for their detention and return to the Capital.

Play ball with us or we'll stick this bat up to where you won't get a grip to pull it out!

Regards,
GtG

PS This crap started in Wisconsin, we didn't do anything about it either and now it's spreading as a legitimate leftist paradigm. Stop them now and stop them HARD!

Iowa does not issue credit cards to their elected Legislators. Iowa does not issue cell phones to their Legislators. Nor does Iowa issue vehicles to their Legislators.

The Iowa Legislature is actually pretty 'lean and mean' when it comes to perks.

You beat me to it and took the words out of my mouth. They know that they’re toast if they come down on either side of this issue, so the cowards flee. They’re not worthy of their offices and should be oustered when they abandon their responsibilities in this manner. Slimeballs.

Pass the law, let them cry.

,“We’ve been doubled-crossed,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy,

How about a $25,000 per day fine and 3 days in jail per day of abandonment of duties? And make it the state penitentiary...

I think so. But not quite as often or as readily as DEMs have been doing so.

In general, the threat of such a means of shutdown is why legislatures have the power to compel attendance and to expel members.

-- PS This crap started in Wisconsin ... --

In 2003, 51 Texas Democratic legislators fled to Oklahoma to kill a Republican re-districting plan.

In 1988, Senator Bob Packwood (R-Ore.)who tried to escape a quorum by barricading himself in his office was forcibly dragged by the Sergeant-at-Arms onto the floor of Congress.

There are more incidents that predate the Wisconsin shenanigans.

Texas had that problem when some of us used to give a damn about what they did in Austin, I dunno about now...They eem to always want to leave the sandbox with their toys at a drop of a hat...

But back then we sent the Texas Rangers (not the baseball team) to go find, and fetch them back...Or at least they tried...

They hid like cowards and conducted business as cowards...

Nowadays, we can conduct business without democrats in the legislature...Ain’t a Super Majority grand!!!

But I am concerned that even having a Super Majority doesn’t matter anymore...

Looks like they took a little buit out of Texas and a few other staes verbage there...

The key word being “Reasonable” or “Reasonably” determin that “Deadly Force is necessary to stop the crime from continuing...

Like I said in the previous post democrats are cowards, they would rather accept the statistical data that shows innocent people being murdered, live and legislate from those pathetic numbers, than look forward to enacting legislation to allow a better armed public to be able to beat back these brazen crimes...

Given the nearly 100 years worth of problems we’ve had with the Second Amendment under the governance of Democrats, mirroring it in the Iowa Constitution seems quite foolhardy.
