Gov. Jerry Brown tangled with a reporter from the conservative Washington Times newspaper after his meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Sunday.
At one point Brown, who was defending his earlier tenure as governor and his efforts to bridge the states budget gap, asked the reporter: Are you a Moonie?
The Washington Times was founded in 1982 by Sun Myung Moon, head of the Unification Church, whose followers were often referred to informally as Moonies.
The Washington Times is a conservative paper, and Brown, after recognizing his interrogator, gave no ground. Browns spokesman Gil Duran joined in the fray, repeatedly calling the reporter, Kerry Picket, a liar.

You aren't allowed to ask difficult questions of your Democrat masters. That's only for REPUBLICANS.
You'll also note their is no reporter credited with this story, other than "PolitiCal". I smell HIT JOB...
“Are you a Moonie?”
“Are you a Papist?”
“Are you a Jew?”
Some politicians get away with just about anything.
Republicans get pilloried over just about nothing.
The appropriate follow-up question by the reporter should have been “Is that one of the churches you discriminate against?”, politely stated, and with a smile.
Facts are facts. She keeps using the word bankruptcy and as much as i despise California and Brown,as much as his policies led to the large deficit the state is not bankrupt. It was close. It may yet happen. The reporter needed to be better prepared.
She should have said, “No Governor Moonie, I am a real reporter, not one of your admiring Moonies.”
I like the way the LA Times labeled the Washington Times as a Conservative newspaper.
The Times is a bit more Conservative than the Washington Post, but it is far from being a Conservative newspaper just as Fox is a bit more Conservative than most of the other networks, but is far from being labeled Conservative.
Governor Moonbeam versus a non-Moonie. Kinda ironic.
She obviously got under his skin. I hope she learns and develops and toughens up and keeps going after dolts like Moonbeam.
I would have asked Brown, “by the way Governor, how did it feel when a REAL American, Ronald Reagan kicked your Daddy’s ass in the election of ‘66? Did you cry like a little girl?”
Governor Moonbeam doesn’t like Moonies?
I don’t know, Governor. Are you a Loonie?
Liberals would/will argue those two observations until spittle flies from their mouths.
Old Jer “gave no ground”? I thought he was trying to give away California’s parks because there was no money to take care of them? He’s doing a job on California, but I don’t think it’s a good job.
If Moonies were identified as liberals, they would be lauded.
Any media outlet that is not a member of the party in good standing gets labeled as such by the Politburo.
Fox is becoming more left leaning every day.
The LA Times writing about old Jer Brown.
“Do you think he likes me? I like him. Don’t tell Patty or she might tell him. His hair is really cool.”
The LA Times reads like a fourth grade girl’s love note.
Notice the moonbeamery of the comments from dingbat Californians that follow the story.
