Democrats to Obama: Tap strategic oil reserve

By: Darren Goode February 25, 2012 06:26 PM EST

Gasoline prices are on a dramatic rise, and everybody's got advice for the White House.

No surprise, Republicans are reviving their "Drill, Baby Drill" catcalls from 2008, but liberals in Washington are getting nervous and asking President Barack Obama to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a potential panacea for escalating gasoline prices.

Picking up on the themes of a speech he gave Thursday at the University of Miami, Obama used his weekly radio address Saturday to remind Americans of his view that if prices at the pump rise as expected in the coming months, “there are no quick fixes to this problem, and you know we can’t just drill our way to lower gas prices.”

He also warned that rising gas prices could hurt any economic recovery. While there is “no silver bullet that will bring down gas prices or reduce our dependence on foreign oil overnight … what we can do is get our priorities straight, and make a sustained, serious effort to tackle this problem,” Obama said.

The potential danger to the economy — and the president's reelection chances — have liberals urging the White House to unleash the SPR now, before it's too late. The national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.65 on Friday, according to AAA.

“Selling reserve oil on the open market is the one step that we know will reduce oil and gasoline prices in the immediate term,” said Daniel Weiss of the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “Every time we sold reserve oil it has lowered oil and gasoline prices. We know it works.”

Well, I guess they're not all too stupid to see the handwriting on the wall with this election year in progress.

I still contend that this will get bad and then just before the elections the dems and obama will *do* something to cause a dramatic drop in price, counting on people's long term memory loss to forget how the dems have SCREWED us over so much in the last 4 years.

Sadly, I must agree with you. However, I must point out that, it's not like he didn't warn the American People. The election of 2008 gave him the go ahead to screw us the American people.
I can't count the times before that election that I warned those on AOL to be careful of what the were wishing for. Well,I guess America wasn't prepared for a Nanny Socialist State. Let's hope that America is wise enough to elect a person that can repair the cluster f*^% that this incompetent has created.

I’m not sure that we have the capacity to refine that extra oil and there is no shortage for that extra oil to replace. Releasing from the SPR might drive speculation down a little but will just mean more oil for other folks. Maybe we can get Chavez to eat some of his oil.

This crap again. Oil storage levels are jammed to the gills. It’s so predictable, it’s like running a Charlie Brown’s Christmas. We’ve seen it 20 times, we like it, we know how it will turn out. All the Dems need is a good theme song behind this otherwise tired movie.

Obama has totally painted himself into a corner.

If he gives in, he’s basically admitting that he’s wrong. And his pride won’t allow him to admit such a thing.

how do you, Mr. Obama, plan to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve so that it will be available when there is a truly Strategic need? ...

The same way that he'll replenish the nuclear arsenal that he first depleted by 70%, and now is depleting another 80% of that remaining 30%.

In other words: running away from the resulting smoldering embers to his native Kenya, to avoid his Ceaușescu moment.

Iran is threatening to cut off the Strait of Hormuz even though it would last only 30 days(at present consumption) that gives the United States enough time to re-open the Strait.

What we need to focus on is finding more drilling sites domestically and use alternative methods like changing coal into gasoline.

Every day everything becomes more surreal...

Seriously. It's an anxiety-inducing nightmare bad trip, and the worst part is all the zero-chanting cult members who think he's doing a good job.

lowers the price by what? 3-4 cents/gal?

It went up 60 cents/gal this week alone in some places

and that wont last to the election...he will probably save that for late October...

There won’t be a “strategic” need while Zer0 is pResident. If we are attacked again he will do nothing. Hence, no reason for the fuel.

“WTF will they do when the reserves are depleted??!!

We will be at the mercy of the muslims and their oil.

THAT may be the plan.”

I honestly and sincerely believe that is the plan of this socialist administration.

This would be the 2nd time this year. The Dems don’t take this country’s national defense seriously, but what else is new. Everything is a gimmick with them.

Your map reminded me of GARFIELD’s explanation of our Oil Shortage:

“Nobody bothered to check the oil.

We didn’t know we were getting low.

The reason for that is purely Geographical.

Our Oil is located in:

Alaska
California
Coastal Florida
Coastal Louisiana
Coastal Alabama
Coastal Mississippi
Coastal Texas
North Dakota
Wyoming
Colorado
Kansas
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
Texas

OUR DIPSTICKS ARE LOCATED IN D.C.!”

Now we can add, “ where they are Presided over by President Pond Scum!”
