Reporting from Washington Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer indicated Saturday that she's likely to endorse one of the Republican presidential candidates before her state's primary election on Tuesday.
Speaking with reporters at the National Governors Assn. meeting in Washington, Brewer first said that she would definitely announce an endorsement before Tuesday, perhaps even as soon as Sunday. But then she hedged, saying, "If I get all my answers."
"I'm pondering," she said. "It's always a difficult decision when you know all of them so well."
Brewer said she spoke with each of the four major hopefuls before Wednesday's nationally-televised debate in her state. She said she would have liked to have seen a more thorough discussion of illegal immigration during the event, and that the candidates "are pretty much saying the same thing."
But she did single Newt Gingrich out for his statement that he would want to work with border governors to deal with the issue.
Brewer is scheduled to appear on NBC's "Meet The Press" on Sunday, along with California Gov. Jerry Brown.
Brewer said she would not be attending a formal dinner at the White House that night being hosted for all of the governors, one month after a heated tarmac discussion with the president when he visited the state. But she would attend a working meeting with her fellow governors at the White House on Monday.

Hopefully she endorses Santorum. Newt is not campaigning in Arizona and would be a waste. If she was a national figure (she is not yet) then endorsing Newt would be fine.
It’ll be Romney.
After the Mesa, AZ (Feb 22) debate Gov. Jan Brewer singled Newt Gingrich out as giving the best answer.
.......And a modern system would be just take control of the border. It is utterly stupid to say that the United States government cant control the border. Its a failure of will, its a failure of enforcement.
(APPLAUSE)
GINGRICH: So let me just take that one example. Lets assume you could, tomorrow morning, have a president who wanted to work with your governor, that instead of suing Arizona, helped Arizona, who actually worked with Arizona. Now
(APPLAUSE)
GINGRICH: whats the fiscal reality three years from now in your emergency rooms, in your schools, in your prisons, of controlling the border? Its a lot less expensive. You just took a major step towards a less expensive future. So I think it is possible to modernize the federal government and cut taxes and develop energy simultaneously. And the three lead you to Gilberts concern. Lets get back to a balanced budget......
If she’s “pondering” she’s waiting for some Romney “stash!”
She was interviewed after the debate and the only candidate she mentioned was Newt. She liked his approach regarding involvement with the border state governors, regarding illegals.
However, as all conservatives should know, it is foolish to predict how a politician will govern based on campaign rhetoric. The more reliable way to determine a candidates position is to review his actual record.
It is clear the Romney campaign, beginning with his 2008 bid, decided to use immigration as one of the few hooks it had to lure conservatives to its camp. With Romneys dismal record on fiscal and social issues, his consultants must have concluded that with so little said about immigration by Romney while governor, they could get away with creating a phony record.
Indeed, if one digs deeply, a disturbing pattern emerges. Romneys hard-line positions on immigration suddenly arose as he began thinking of running for president in 2006. Moreover, his current views on immigration usually contradict what he actually said and did as governor. It appears that Romneys immigration positions have been created solely for his presidential run or were based upon events that simply never occurred.".........
I heard her talking about Newt. So you believe she is going to endorse Newt and then have Romney go for the win? She is not that stupid.
She shouldn’t endorse anyone. These Governors should stay the hell out of primary process. They should act a little above-board considering their state is ‘hosting’ the primary.
Because it is panic time for the Milt campaign again. Santorum is slashing Milts lead in today's polling. Rick is surging at the right time and looks like he is going to make this a real race in AZ. Brewer probably got an envelop full of cash and a few promises to support Milt before Tuesday.
What's it matter anyway. Endorsements are generally useless. Just ask Nikki Haley.
I am not implying she is stupid, geesh. Who knows what any politician is going to do. Just thought I would mention the interview.
True enough but not relevant. She’ll pick Romney because she needs the Mormon votes for her next and final election, who will desert her in droves if she endorses any non-Mormon. If she doesn’t like Romney, she would not endorse anybody. That’s my calculus, I could be wrong because it’s just an opinion.
Rick or Newt or committing career suicide, Jan.
She’ll go for the establishment. Romney or Santorum.
We’re on mail ballots, the primary is now, has been for a couple of weeks.
Mitt stacked the Arizona debate audiences with lots of Mormons, who cheered everything he said and made a special point of booing everything Rick Santorum said.
Mormons are a significant voting segment in Arizona, and they will certainly turn out for Bishop Romney.
Would they hold it against Jan if she endorses Newt or Rick? Probably, but they might not turn out in such large numbers if Romney is no longer in the race next fall. But I’m afraid the politically safe thing to do would be to endorse Romney.
She said she had not intended to endorse anyone. Probably Romney is now twisting her arm. Well, we’ll see. On the whole, she’s done a good job in a not very conservative state, so the best thing would be if she just keeps her mouth shut and endorses no one.
bump your comment
That certainly has been the pattern but if she doesn't want to be shaking her finger in the face of the next president, she will not endorse Romney.
Shell pick Romney because she needs the Mormon votes for her next and final election, who will desert her in droves if she endorses any non-Mormon.
Yes, there are a lot of Mormons in AZ but they aren't the majority.
Then too McCain has endorsed Mitt so he might have told Brewer to tow the party line.
