LANCASTER, NY - Representative Kathy Hochul (D - 26th District) was booed at her own town hall meeting on Friday morning in Lancaster.
The packed crowd was critical of Hochul for supporting President Obama's plan to require religiously affiliated employers, such as hospitals and schools, to provide full contraception coverage to female employees.
The plan was later altered. It now calls for those workers to get free contraceptive coverage from health insurers, thus sparing religious based groups, morally opposed to paying for birth control, from having to do so.
Even though Hochul's town hall meeting was open to any topic, the large crowd focused on the contraception coverage issue.
When Hochul spoke in support of the President, the crowd booed. Many in the audience carried signs, including one that read: "Kathy why have you betrayed our Catholic institutions?" One woman in the crowd told Hochul: "This President has lied to us repeatedly when he proclaims support for conscience protection in his infamous speech at Notre Dame as well as in the executive order he signed following passage of the health care law. He is not worthy of your support in this matter." Another man shouted "It's an insult to the Catholics in this country to even listen to that gibberish. It is an absolute insult and Catholics deserve better. We were taking care of this country's sick long before the government got involved in it."
Pastor Leon Bienart of Our Lady of Pompeii Church also asked Hochul if the President or Congress consulted with Catholic bishops before they issued the policy. Hochul replied that it was a good question and she would try to get an answer. The Congresswoman also replied this way to the questions and criticism "We're not gonna agree on this one. I'm gonna tell you that I will stand for our religious freedoms. But I don't see a conflict here. Now that there's been an accommodation that says religious institutions do not have to provide these services. So we're just going to have to disagree on that."
The meeting was heavily publicized on Catholic radio and many Catholic organizations encouraged people to attend and discuss the contraception issue. It was also brought up specifically by Father Beinart during his Mass on February 5th when he criticized President Obama and Congresswoman Hochul.

Kind of funny. A couple of weeks ago, our priest was mentioning the contraception/abortion thing in his homely. How we should contact our reps and all that. Then out of the blue he starts talking about how we should welcome and treat immigrants better, knowing that more immigrants, mean more dems, mean more of the same. Unbelievable.

Nope. Try again. Many religious based groups are self insured and will still be responsible for coverage.
The Congresswoman also replied this way to the questions and criticism “We’re not gonna agree on this one. I’m gonna tell you that I will stand for our religious freedoms. But I don’t see a conflict here. Now that there’s been an accommodation that says religious institutions do not have to provide these services. So we’re just going to have to disagree on that.”
Enjoy your remaining time in office, you arrogant bi***. Many religious based groups are self-insured and will still be required to have coverage for this garbage.
I don't live in the 26th, but I followed this race with interest. This was Tom Reynolds's seat. He barely won his last election because a big stink was made up here over his handling of the Mark Foley business. He was replaced by Chris Lee who resigned after his Facebook/looking for transvestites scandal.
So there was some Republican fatigue to start with up there. The GOP ran a woman state legislator who should have done well but who was so tightly scripted, she came across very poorly. The situation was made worse by a millionaire gadfly who runs in that district every election as an ultra-conservative but who isn't opposed to turning into a Democrat when that slot's open. This time he ran as a fake tea-partier.
That left Hochul who was well-known and well-respected in Buffalo as a competent County Clerk who had actually made going to the DMV a fairly pleasant experience. I wondered how she would turn out.
And now we know.
I believe the Catholic church came out and pushed for Obamacare - which is where the administration claims its authority to require the church to cover contraception.

I’ll try to act shocked when she wins again this Nov. :(:(:(:(:(
You might want to do some research on that: http://hotair.com/archives/2010/03/14/catholic-bishops-send-message-to-faithful-we-oppose-obamacare/
I doubt the GOP has anyone to run against her but this will be a big deal up here. Buffalo is still heavily-Catholic and likes its Democrat politicians to pretend to be conservative. The radio talk shows should be fun this week.
In other words, they supported Obamacare as long as there is no requirement of Abortion.
So they were wishy-washy - supporting Obamacare (kind of).
But of course, when you make a deal with a socialist Devil (which is my over-arching point)....
This issue is not going away!
well there’s just a huge section of liberal catholics out there that lapped this up. And are just like the congresswoman who are unapologetic about it and it’s more important to get the free birth control and abortion rammed through over any religious and/or moral objections.
Clear who Hochul cares about pleasing. Crystal clear.
Bumping this thread now, because Andrew Cuomo just announced that Kathy Hochul will be his running mate.
Cuomo picks people just like him.
