White House hopeful Mitt Romney styled himself as a Michigan-bred "car guy" whose wife drives "a couple of Cadillacs" as he tried to woo Motor City voters ahead of a key primary.
Giving what was billed as a major economic policy speech days before state Republicans choose their presidential nominee, Romney presented a plan to lower taxes and cut spending -- and insisted that he was the only candidate capable of beating Democrat Barack Obama in the November 6 presidential election.
But the speech may be remembered more for its setting and Romney's off-hand remarks rather than its substance.
Before 1,200 guests of the Detroit Economic Club, Romney took to the podium on the 30 yard line of Ford Field stadium -- home of the NFL's Detroit Lions -- surrounded by 65,000 empty seats.

Hopefully this ends the campaign. Optics are a powerful thing.
What on earth were his handlers thinking; booking Ford Field. What a debacle.
“Optics are a powerful thing.”
You are correct now look at the crowd at ORU at the 40 sec mark :) http://electad.com/videos/newt-gingrich-town-hall-at-oru-tulsa-oklahoma-february-20-2012/
Oops!
Romney’s campaign staff needs to be fired for that alone. Who would stage a campaign appearance in an empty stadium? At least Santorum’s people have the sense to rent a small section of the ballroom at a Ramada Inn. You know, those rooms that you can make even smaller by dragging those wall partitions across the middle of it. The resulting space is no bigger than my basement but at least cramming a couple hundred people into it makes it seem like Santorum has a highly energetic crowd - especially after an hour or so of open bar beforehand at that little place tucked between the indoor pool and the exercise room just off the lobby.
when this broke the romnbots were raking the messengers over the coals
buying american autos is patriotic, attacking mitt only because hes lds etc
but it gave a pretty good pic of a candidate not just with a silver spoon in his mouth but living in a silver bubble his whole life
(and you can always tell the magic underwear brigade because they cry victim from the beginning)
id love to see a reporter pull that trick they did years ago w bush sr. ithink it was? (not sure) where they asked him how much a loaf of bread cost, how much a doz eggs or a gal of milk cost, and he didnt have a clue
mitts never stood in checkout he hires illegal immigrants for that
Where was that town hall ears had a while back (Pittsburgh I think it was) where the place was empty except for a few rows of chairs yet the media pictures made it look like the place was full??
I’ll see if I can find them but my web searching skills leave something to be desired.
Let’s get real people, there is a ton of things to bash Romney about, but this is a closed invitation only speech. Not a public rally, not a townhall meeting.
Molehill meet Mountain.
[...but this is a closed invitation only speech]
Then they should have held it in a mobile home.
Excuses, excuses, excuses.
So he didn’t have 50,000 people to invite and yet, he still held it at the stadium? Smart. Very smart!
It all depends.
Mitt’s $10,000 bet comment during the debate brought him a well deserved beating. Saying his wife drives American cars doesn’t deserve a lot of attention. (He’d be a fool to say otherwise in Michigan) Saying he liked firing people was a dumb way of saying something correct but it was still dumb to use those words.
The stadium stunt was a really dumb move and he deserves the beating he gets over it. Not to mention giving the perfect trees speech again.
Nah, he doesn't think too highly of himself.
and thats the way you’d like it to play, huh?
so...are you thinking of censoring the images, dictating what peoples reactions to the images, should be, or both?
this the real world not the mormon world where lds romnbots can bring obedience by fatwa
(i know youre not mormon nobody is)
We knew Romney ( General Cornwallis ) was a empty suit, but, now we see for ourselves that his supporters are empty too.
