Buddy Roemer blasts both parties as 'joined at the billfold,' launches independent bid

WASHINGTON -- Blasting the two major parties as "joined at the billfold," former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer announced Thursday that he is abandoning his bid for the Republican nomination for an independent candidacy for president.

"Last night the Republicans held their 23rd television debate. I have not been invited to a single one," said Roemer. "I am the only candidate who has been shut out by the Republican Party. Well, we're on a mission to take this country back from the powerful special interests. We are prepared to challenge both parties. Both parties are joined at the bill fold, they are just alike, they are addicted to money."

Roemer's 25-minute address was broadcast live on-line from the Santa Monica headquarters of Yowie, an Internet chat site. More than 4,300 people were on-line watching and listening to Roemer.

"We're dropping out of the Republican Party we have been a proud member for 21 years and we're becoming an independent," said Roemer. "We will pursue the Americans Elect unity ticket over the next several months." In addition to seeking the nomination of Americans Elect, a non-profit organization that is gaining ballot access in all 50 states for a ticket to be nominated on-line, Roemer also will be pursuing the nomination of the Reform Party, originally founded by Ross Perot, a move that will enable him to continue to accumulate federal matching monies.

Roemer, who was by choice not raising enough money and thus was never a viable candidate has quit the GOP race.

He’ll seek to get on the ballot in November through that stupid “Americans Elect” thing and/or whatever the hell is left of the Reform party.

Don’t be fooled by these scumbags.

“Still, many of the group’s experienced political operatives hail from centrist circles: Chief Executive Kahlil Byrd is a GOP strategist who worked for Massachusetts’ Democratic governor, Deval Patrick. Pollster Doug Schoen worked for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Democratic presidential campaign, as well as for New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, an independent.

One of the main financial backers is Elliot’s father, Peter Ackerman, a private investment executive who made tens of millions of dollars working with junk bond trader Michael Milken in the 1980s. He alone has given at least $1.55 million to Americans Elect, according to tax documents the group filed last year while it was briefly organized as a political organization. In October, it changed its designation to a 501(c)4 social welfare group, “

I’m still running for delegate to the Republican National Convention.

Roemer won’t be able to run, in Illinois, in the general election, since IL has a sore loser law.

Think of any RINO hack or Rat loser and you probably have just named someone who is pushing this Americans Elect. It is another in a long line of worthless "moderate" groups selling ideological irrelevance, a la "No Lables".

If you look at the American Elect website and look at some of the founders you will find they have ties to OWS. I looked at the site last night and I would not be at all surprised if Obama and Soros were a part of it as well. Also on the site they have images of the candidates that were proposed and there is a picture of Obama which I felt is a bit strange since he is the incumbent.
Americans Elect is a sham

Yeah I saw their website, some of them even want to back Obama. The whole thing is stupid.

It’s probably a plot to nominate someone who would hurt the Republican nominee. I hope it fails.

Just like No Labels, it will fail miserably.

Well I never even heard of “No Labels” before, so I’d say they have indeed failed. ;D

Yes Nader, I know he doesn’t like Obama.

Make it 5 elections in a row Ralph.

I hope at least that the Greens nominate someone who could do appreciable damage (even 1% would be swell).

Sad to hear this. I know Buddy and like him a lot. I even sent him $100. He has some things to say, but 3rd Party is a awful decision.

“whatever the hell is left of the Reform party.”

Someday it might be the right time for Conservatives to jump over there and stage a coup. They’re on the ballot and get matching funds, so if we have to abandon the Republican party at some point, it would probably be a lot easier to do that than to try and start from scratch.

Phil, are you still going to vote for Roemer in the GOP primary now that he’s dropped out of the race? You could vote for another Republican candidate and still vote for yourself for delegate. Not that it matters anyway — in Illinois the votes for the delegate count and not the votes cast for the candidates themselves. Are you still in IL-10? I don’t see you on the list of IL-10 Republican delegates:

It does really annoy me when politicians pull a Bob Dole and constantly refer to themselves as "we", like they have a multiple personality disorder. Also reminds me of the godawful Ayn Rand novel I had to read in H.S. (the theme was there's no individualism in some future society... made painfully obvious by the fact EVERY single character would say stuff like "We're leaving the Republican Party. We will pursue the Americans Elect unity ticket over the next several months" )

;-)

I think that about 2/3 of Reform Party members are liberal, so Roemer’s campaign might help the republican nominee. Usually, the strongest third-party presidential candidate takes votes from the incumbent party. In 2000, when we had a democrat president, Ralph Nader got almost 3% of the vote, helping Bush win. In 1992, when George H.W. Bush ran for re-election, Perot got 19%, helping Clinton win. In 1976, when Ford ran, two conservatives, the American Independent Party and Libertarian candidates got enough votes to help Carter win.

I haven’t decided the presidential candidate for whom I’ll vote.

In the new map, the town where I’m registered, Glenview, is in the 9th Congressional District. According to the Board of Elections site, I’m running for delegate, in the 9th Dist.
